Very nice design.  I often carry a small revolver in a leather pocket holster in a Mountain Feedback.  This takes up virtually all the space in the Feedbag, though, and the bag is not easy to open.

Just finished my first frame bag.  I am thinking of sewing a pocket similar to what you have designed inside the right portion of the frame bag just below the zipper.

Sewing is all done.  Now I just have to bolt it through the stiffeners to the down tube and seat tube.

I decided to keep it simple with no internal dividers.  Will probably carry a hydration bladder in it during rides, along with other stuff.  Will let the end of the drinking hose peek out between the two zipper pulls for access.

It's 2.5 inches wide.  After test riding it, I think I could have gone with 3 inches wide.

Cost less than $20 in materials.  A fun project for a dad who can't sew and a 16-year-old daughter who can!

Just saw the other White Rim thread.  Disregard this one.

Starting to take shape...

Sewing on Velcro loops and sandwiching the plastic stiffeners between the Cordura and the silnylon.

A couple friends and I will ride the trail in early October.  Are planning a three-day, self-supported clockwise ride.

I am looking for feedback from those who've ridden the trail.  We have permits for 2 overnighters -- at Gooseberry and Potato.  What detours are the best?  Is it feasible to do without a support vehicle, etc.?

I posted this on MTBR and got a couple responses.  Wondering what you guys/gals think.

Thanks for any input!

Plastic stiffeners cut and laid out.  Next step will be sewing Velcro loops on the outside of the Cordura before working on the zipper and sandwiching the stiffeners between the Cordura and silnylon liner.

Got my materials together.  Found a 24x48" sheet of .020" PETG plastic for $6.  This stuff has some body and stiffness but is not brittle.  Will use it for stiffeners in the bad.  Seems like it would be good to use as the basis for some type of waterproof roll to mount on the bars.

Can't remember if I posted a photo of this on this forum.  I am converting my steel 29er Inbred into a bikepacking rig.  Fargo V2 fork, two used Anything Cages, XT 2x10 setup and starting to sew a frame bag.

Love the geometry of this frame, and the fork feels great on it.

Just built a cardboard template for my first attempt at a frame bag.  Hope to do a one-piece design (or something close to it) as shown by Greg Climbs in his bike packing 2.0 photos on Flickr.

Bought 1000 Cordura for the outside and silnylon for the liner.  Will use plastic stiffeners for bolting it to the water bottle cage bosses on the seat tube and down tube.  Plan to use Velcro on the top and a single horizontal zipper on the right side.

I am thinking of sewing a partial vertical divider inside so I can slide a 3-liter bladder in the back of the pack, just forward of the seat tube, and be able to pull the drinking hose out the top.

I want to keep it simple and sturdy.  Did not know about the X-PAC fabrics when I bought the Cordura and silnylon.  It will be interesting to learn about the advantages of X-PAC.

Please post up comments and recommendations, if you have them!  Thanks, Joe

Found these at a local hardware store for $2 apiece.  They seem to lock onto the silnylon well, but aren't very compact.  Made out of a hard plastic.

I sometimes carry a revolver in a pocket holster in a Mountain Feed Bag on the bars.  Have thought about molding a kydex holster with attach points that would mount within a frame bag.  Anyone have experience with something like this?

I got some materials for sewing a frame bag -- some 1000 cordura and silver silnylon -- and I am impressed with the light weight and apparent toughness of the silnylon material.

I can see using this for tarp/shelter options.  I am wondering what people are using for fastening/tying up silnylon tarps.  Specifically, I am wondering about plastic fasteners that go on/off at the time of use and would allow me to use as large or small a portion of tarp as needed at the time.

Can you folks with this type of experience post your thoughts, ideas, photos?  Thanks so much!

Joe

I am about to embark on a frame bag project.  Was hoping to do a one-piece design like that shown in the Flickr set Bikepacking 2.0.  Is it standard to do 1000 Cordura on the outside and 500 on the inside?  I will be using a regular home seeing machine.  Will it handle these layers of fabric together?

Thanks for the advice!

Just a note to Ergon pack owners (with packs using the Flink connector point).  I replaced the central Flink screw/hardware in mine with a longer screw, washers and a nylock nut to keep it from coming apart.  Had mine fall apart a couple times by un-threading during long rides.  The nylock nut was the fix.  Works great.

And I am obviously looking for a tarp, not a food product.  Sorry for the typo!

79  Forums / Question and Answer / Frame bags on carbon frame? on: September 10, 2012, 02:48:21 PM
I am beginning to sort out frame bags for bike packing and have the option of gearing up carbon or steel bikes.  I would prefer using my carbon On-One 29er.  It is stout and light with a good carbon fork.  But are there issues with using bags on a carbon frame?  I am not too worried about cosmetic issues (bikes are to be used), but wonder about other wear and tear issues on a carbon frame.

Any advice?  Thanks.
