The minstrel/Chinook-like winds in South Park that were blowing me literally off my bike proved way more spirit crushing - going 4 mph on HW 24, hoping to get water and food in Hartsel.
That road is horrible, I hit that one last year the day before the 4th of July and the traffic was insane. I was actually run off the ride by people with bikes on the back of their SUV, unreal. And yes, the winds were insane too!

It sounds like you are uploading the course to your route as opposed to your saved tracks. The hcx only holds 1,000 way points and that ACA waypoint data is something like 2600 points give or take. You need to upload the files to your saved tracks in chunks of 500 max, not your route! Hope this helps.

I doubt it, unless you're planning on more than a day-long snow slog.
Hah, yeah, wishful thinking I guess, oh well then, let 2011 be the year of the reroute!

That looks like what I was thinking for up north, not sure how whitefish divide is going to be either, columbine alt might me needed. Not sure about Boreas, looks like it could be bad. And then there's the whole question of getting into WY, looks bad as well.

Anyone want to weigh in with a rumor on possible re-routes besides the fernie alt? From the snow sat estimates I'd say we are looking at multiple alt's but maybe I'm just reading it wrong. I live in Oregon and looking at what's on the divide versus the cascades and I'd say it's mostly FUBAR. Perhaps that is just the pessimist in me!

Is it just me or does this article make it sound like the TD route goes right through armageddon?
Perhaps we should just reroute for some random fire roads through the dakotas, nebraska, and kansas then finally back into NM.

Good to hear Joe! You rock!
And now on to my feelings on the reroute.
I think this talk of two routes and worry about the GC is mostly pointless. Last year mid-race everyone had to detour because of the fire in NM and it was a complete non-issue. Just because the detour is happening earlier in the race this year, it doesn't change ANYTHING in my eyes. People could have ridden through the fire section last year, I believe it was nearly contained before the racers even got to it. Someone could have very well ridden it if they wanted to, but it seems all were smart enough to just not bother. It was re-routed for a reason! If it's a week down to the TD and Matthew Lee says Fernie alternate, take it if you feel like racing! If you want the wilderness experience from hell then by all means take the Flathead route. I will be disappointed if I don't get to do the Flathead this year as I only did the US section last year, but I'll be damned if I'm post-holing through 4 feet of that crap with a bike. Not what I signed up for, TD is not Iditasport! </rant>

Wow yeah, can't beat that. I will most certainly be down for one night, possibly two. I should know in the next few days and will give you another heads up.

We should just make a "ride the spine" race and just crown that the world's toughest mountain bike race. Then no one will care about the piddly ole TD anymore.
