watch the scene in the revenant... yeah, its old tech, but i am pretty sure the gun was loaded and ready to fire. he had no time to draw once he knew it was coming for him... (and generally a beautiful movie, aside from the death and gore...)

Hmmm. iPhone? Android? Not familiar with the Delorme, assume you kept it connected to text, but assume the unit itself did the heavy lifting of connecting to the sat system and bringing down the GPS signal?
When I meant 'top off' I meant while I have capability to use the Limefuel as an intermediate battery, I found it easier to just charge the batter (or my helmet light) during daylight hours, and top off what I needed to at night (usually my phone). The phone would be used for the occasionally panorama image, photos, and text, otherwise in airplane mode unless I needed to communicate. Bluetooth off as well (Im a SPOT user).

Thanks for posting. Regarding the USBWerk - was the phone on? Or in airplane mode / off? I've doing charging a cache battery and then topping off my phone works the best in really rough terrain. I have used it to run the etrex and the go pro directly. And I have used to to keep the phone charged while on and navigating / using endomondo - but those were short rides with good cell signal. The moment the phone is hinting for service and / or has the gps in use is when you see huge drops in battery.

I have the avid speed dial levers and the bolt on it does affect 1 hand position. I need to get something with a hinge or different bolt pattern. Not a big deal as I've been riding it for a couple of years, but on long gravel or road sections I notice and remind myself to fix it...

There are other "clock is always running" self-supported races, other than bikepacking, right? How do they manage this question?
I'm thinking sail races around the world, and such.
randoneurring... while technically its not a race, folks do ride right on through. the 400k is the first place where there is potential for sleep deprivation, although the time limit is 27 hours IIRC. the 600k can be ridden straight through, the 1200k is a 90 hour time limit, so the faster you ride, the sooner you finish, or the more you sleep, eat, etc.

I have a somewhat different goal with the SPOT. I have it tracking me live, and have a family member (or worried girlfriend) following me pretty closely online. If I fall off a cliff and stay motionless for a few hours without an OK message they'll get worried and come looking. I'm using it much more as a "where is he now" than a panic button. When possible I also try to avoid a backpack, though if I do have to, I guess I'll put the spot on the shoulder strap.
Back jersey pocket, or run a strap through that little case they gave you when you bought it, and around the bag, or through the bag straps?

I have mixed feelings about the SPOT being on the bike. Generally mine is in the Revelate bag, but I also use it in a jersey pocket or Wingnut mesh pocket. If I end up needing it for an emergency and am away or thrown from the bike I kind of want it on my person...
