Anyone ridden this route yet? We are headed up there in about a week and plan to ride the route. Just wanted to get a bit more detail than the bikepacking.com page gives, if possible.
TIA!

Forums / Routes / Looking for a route around Moab...with a caveat
|
on: June 22, 2016, 12:49:42 PM

Yes, I realize there are tons of routes, but I have a specific need.
Myself, my husband, and another couple are looking to do a 3-4 day route in the Moab area. The kicker is that the other couple will have a side-by-side for her. We would likely just load all of our stuff up in the side-by-side and set out together. The days would need to be relatively easy (a la side-by-side) but would cover the great views as well. Camping up on a ridge would be icing on the cake. We want to all be able to do the same route, or damn near close to it. If there's some single track that peels off within view of double track, that would be awesome.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Since we will likely have a side-by-side or an ATV, supplies won't be an issue at all, including water.

We're getting a TON of rain down here in Texas this spring. The temperatures are warm though, so that's nice. I've seen a few posts about the long term forecasts for different areas, but I'm interested to know what people are actually seeing currently out there. I've seen some reports of a fresh 4" of snow falling in some areas. Any real time reports out there from folks?

I'm seeing reference to emails being received. Should I be concerned if I haven't gotten an email yet? I sent my LOI and then a follow-up, at which point I did get a response. Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything important!

I'm seeing some references to a store 40 miles outside of Cuba (SoBo). Does anyone know what this is referencing? I'm seeing missions along the way. Are these camping options? Water options?
TIA!

Yep, but if you grabbed it this morning you got v1. Make sure your file is named 'v2' for the latest, which includes another reroute right near the beginning.
Also, I just posted a 'v3' GDMBR basemap (.img file) for Garmin units. It has been updated to include the Butte stuff as well as more Canadian coverage, so it should be the whole dang route. Gary Meyer was on top of this one -- thanks Gary.
Thanks for the heads up! Is that V3 basemap on the same page? I'm seeing v2 only.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but it's not pulling up for me. It appears to be HTML that doesn't convert to the document when I try to open it. Anyone else having an issue?

This is great and is effectively what I've been working on for the past few days. Is there any chance you still have the word version of this? Converting from PDF to a word doc is never as straight forward as I would like it to be. Thanks for sharing!!

I'm considering heading up and riding part of the Divide as a last training effort before the TD. I've been watching places like Salida and I've been seeing that they've been getting snow, but that this coming week is supposed to be warm. Does anyone have any insight? Would I be better off just staying down here in Texas and doing a tour?
Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm not familiar with how the Rockies are at elevation this time of year, especially this year.

Running the stock Schwable Thunder Burt's that came on the Cutthroat now. The wheels aren't the common denominator being that two of the tires were still brand new, in their packaging, still unsold at the shop. I've also been running these wheels with various other tires on my Vaya for around 2,000 miles, both gravel and pavement touring.

Recently put these on a set of HED Belgium + rims and set them up tubeless. We aired the rear up to 40psi and had it blow off the rim. Thought it just wasn't seated so we tried again and it held. I made it 2 miles down the road and it blew off while riding.
Came up to the bike shop and checked the two they had there and found the same issue. Headed home to check the 4th one and are expecting to see the same thing. Wondering if anyone else has run into issues?
I tried to get a picture of all 3 tires and the specific problem areas. If you look closely, you can see how to bead is cut away and is virtually nonexistent. The shop is going to be sending them back, so that side is covered at least.
That's NOT something I want to worry about while loaded and hitting rocks, etc. A small bump in the right place and the bead will pop off and you're SOL since a tube won't even save you.
EDIT: make that 4 tires with the same issue, in the exact same spot on each tire. I'll also note that the tires we purchased and the tires that were at the shop were purchased at different times on different orders, more than a month apart. If they were the same order, I'd be inclined to think it was a bad batch. However, with that much time differential on a brand new, highly anticipated tire, I'm guessing it's an issue with the manufacturing process, not just a bad batch...

From my research and talking with folks who have completed the course, there are some muddy sections and some sandy sections. From my experience, those two things on cross width tires just doesn't sound fun. Sand is fine when you're on a 15lb CX bike in the middle of a race that might only last an hour or so, but for the length of the Divide, I'm just not sure that sounds like a winning combination.

Has anyone managed to see how the winter has been along the route? I just checked weather in Salida and noticed that they're already hitting 70 degrees during the days. Short of tracking the weather pages for day-by-day weather information, I'm wondering if there's been any discussion about the conditions over the winter and what it might mean for June.

For those of you who have completed the divide, would you mind sharing what you spent while on route?
I'm just trying to get an idea on a budget, including daily food costs, camping costs, hotels, etc. How many nights did you end up stealth camping, paying for camping, staying in a hotel?
I'm thinking $60/day for food is more than adequate, allowing for the occasional splurge meal in a town that allows for it. hehe
Any info would be greatly appreciated and I hope to see some of you out there on the trail this summer!

Forums / Question and Answer / GPS unit for the divide?
|
on: February 12, 2016, 12:07:11 PM

I'm doing some research on which GPS unit would fit my needs best for the divide. I currently have a Garmin 1000 that I plan to use as well. Will the eTrex 35 fit all of the way points without issue? Trying to understand the differences between the units and it seems to boil down to memory and how many way points they support. I don't mind spending a bit more if it means I'm getting a unit that doesn't limit me. Thanks for any input!
