1  Forums / Classifieds / WTB: Surly ICT Frameset, Small, P.P. Pink on: April 29, 2022, 01:00:39 AM
Trying to find a Prickly Pear Pink ICT frameset for my wife (5'2") in size small. Ideally not beat up. She fell in love with the color, and I'd like to get her off her size large Wendigo and on to something more appropriate. Anybody have one they're willing to part with?

I'm in SW Idaho, happy to pay shipping or possibly pick up. Love a good road trip.

Should work as long as you can find a rim with the same number of spoke holes. I don't really see why not. Should be 100mm hub spacing on the trailer.

But then, why not on your bike so you can have power even when you're not attached to the trailer? What's the advantage of putting it on the trailer instead?

3  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Rear racks on hardtails - why don't people use them? on: April 16, 2022, 12:52:53 AM
I use racks. I just like the security and capacity racks offer. My camping gear isn't very heavy, but it is fairly bulky, so racks work well for me and my setup. Traditional bikepacking bags can work, but I really struggle getting everything to fit easily. My trips are also s24o's, so maybe I'd feel differently after a few weeks into a 2,000 mile journey.

Stop it, you're going to make me wish I'd never left Wisconsin! Runs right thru the lands of my birth out there in the driftless region. Best of luck! Hope I get the chance to ride it someday.

Personal opinion here. You have a comfort cruiser style of bike, which puts you very upright, putting most of your weight over the rear wheel. You could put a light load back there, but too much (25lbs+) and I would worry about taking wheel damage from potholes and the like.

Putting a rack on the front suspension fork, with the low weight up front and the steep headtube angle, I'd be a little concerned about how heavy the steering would get. I run an Ice Cream Truck with a wide front rack, and when it's loaded beyond about 15lbs out ahead of the steerer tube, the steering gets way heavier and less fun to deal with. Fine if you're hauling a little wood back to camp for a campfire, less fine if you're putting up 60 mile days.Testing would be needed.

If you're married to the idea of a front rack, the Topeak TetraRack M1 front rack (and MTX bag system) is the rack I'd be looking into because of it's compatibility with a suspension fork, and the bag's fairly generous capacity with the panniers deployed.

So given all that, and assuming you're hoping to bring enough basics for camping, my instinct leads me to ask, have you considered a trailer? It would eliminate the need to balance loads, it'll reduce the risk of damaging the rear wheel, and be a great workaround for the challenges with attaching gear to the bike. The trade-off is pulling weight, but you did mention you're not out to set records. If I'm riding your bike, a trailer is the solution I would personally pursue, depending on how much cargo you're trying to carry.
