Thanks for replies. I'm pretty sure I need to follow a Route, I think a track refers to a route "recorded" by the gps, happy to be wrong though. I am not sure why the maps loaded on my gps unit affect it, isn't it more about how the Route is created? i have created Routes on ridewithgps and Garmin basemap, both allow auto-routing as far as I'm aware. Thanks, Scott

Hi one and all, I recently used my GPS as my primary tool for navigating through an event and learnt some very valuable lessons. Until that event I had used my GPS to basically record my route and to verify my position, which worked perfectly on routes I had good knowledge of! I now know you need to be really zoomed in to see the track being created when off course! I am having trouble getting turn by turn "instructions' on my .gpx routes. I have added the navigation screens on the map page to tell me the distance to and name of next waypoints, but how do I now get that information into my route? Do I have to make each and every turn a waypoint to have this work? If so, can this be done automatically when creating a route? OR, can an imported .gpx route have the waypoints automatically created or do I have to go through the route and create waypoints for every turn manually? Then, once I have the turn by turn waypoints, how do I have proximity alarms created for the turns? Am I expecting too much from my device? I know that is how a friends 810 (or similar) unit works this way, as in it tells him when a turn is coming up, when he's gone past a turn etc. The answer may well already exist somewhere on the forum but I can't seem to find the exact answer I'm looking for, feel free to point me to the right place if it does. I feel a bit stupid because I am sure it is quite easy but I certainly can't work it out. Thanks in advance, Scott in NZ

Hello everyone from sunny, magical Pie Town, NM! I haven't even begun to dig into the pages and pages of this discussion yet but I understand there was a lot of well wishes and cheering going on. I just wanted to drop you all a quick note to say thank you. My blue dot could almost feel the positive energy coming from you all. I'm excited to see all the craziness that occurred on the forum once I re-enter into cyber-connected-society. For now I'll be eating more pie and relaxing at the absolutely marvelous Toaster House. Pie Town is truly magical. The locals and the pie are well worth the visit. As to the question of what pie I ate the day before the final showdown... It's a trade secret but let me assure you Kathy's pie at Pie-o-neer Pies very well might have been the deciding factor in my race.
Cheers to you all! Happy trails and best wishes to everyone on trail and congratulations to everyone who has finished. Josh Kato
Congratulations Josh, phenomenal ride, that was inspiring

Hey kiwidave, Rob mentioned on FB that he chased Michelle for 25 miles before his knee said no more with 20 miles to go. Michelle took Rob's finish line photos. Congratulations Rod, well done man, three days off last year, you rock!

If you really want to bitch about athletes pick on the ones that make millions and who are constantly whining about how underpaid they are! These guys bust their butts and get little if nothing in return.
To be clear the tortoise, I wasn't "bitching" about JayP, sorry if it came across like that. It was meant more as an observation on comments he had made in the past when the two leaders of the TD "seemed" to be riding together and he was vocal about how that wasn't a pure ride, in his opinion. Anyhoo, back to the racing.....

Nyet, this is considered very bad form. Run what you brung, ship home (as in *you* take the time to ship it) or throw away -- no caching and retrieving. I have to agree with earlier comments about no 'hand-holding' to the finish for Jay. I doubt that's going to happen with a record on the line. I'm surprised he has been 'holding hands' (using his own words) with Neil so much, anyway, after his 'eagles soar alone' commentary in years past. So we have ourselves a horse race! This is rare to see this late in the game, so the next 24 hours should be mighty interesting. Good thing we upgraded the TL servers the other night. I'm rooting for Kato. To get back in contact with the leaders after so long, when it's so easy to convince yourself they are out of reach -- that's impressive determination. And he seems to be having fun, to boot. Thanks for bringing up JayP's "holier than thou" rant from a couple of years ago Scott. I have found it interesting that he has ridden with Neil for so long in this years event after ranting on about how bad it was that Ollie and Craig seemed to ride together that year. It has certainly been exciting to watch this year with such close racing. Gutted for Seb Dunne :-( Carry on

Holy moly check out Seb Dunne, keeping the big boys honest up the front. His wife Beth Dunne is cruising along nicely too. Cleary doing the Kiwi Brevet earlier this year taught them both a lot.
Come on the Kiwi contingent Rob Davidson, Greg Galway, Peter Schaap and Dallis Waters!!
Lael Wilcox is riding so so fast, man I hope she can keep that up, awesomeness.
