Hello

Have you recently upgraded or converted your Chris King ISO hub to something other than the 135x10 QR? If so i would like to buy your old axle as i need to fit a wheel to an older frame. Hit me up if you got something.

Thanks- Jim

YOOO

I am looking for info on a shuttle service from Durango to Silverton. Looking to ride segment 25 to the end of the CT. The train is an option but expensive, there is a taxi service that is more expensive. Any thoughts?

Thanks- JF

Hello

I am planning A dirt touring trip this fall from my place in west Phoenix to the south rim, maybe beyond? My plan is to hit up Wickenburg, Yarnell, Skull valley, Prescott till i hit the coco route at 89a / mingus where i will either go to williams or flag depending on weather and how i feel at that moment. My problem is finding my way from Prescott (think white spar campground) to where the 89 and the coco route meet. Now remember this is a touring trip not a hard core bike pack, but i found A good looking dirt road that runs north from Humbolt to the 89 just a couple miles from the intersection i am looking for. My question is.. Is there any connections from White spar area to Humbolt? I have called the forest service and some local shops but no one seems to have any ideas. I am open to any route ideas anybody may have, i dont mind a little pavement. I am trying to get my hands on a Prescott natty forest map that will hopefully help out a little.

Thanks for your help! JF

HMMM.. this one is very tempting for myself. I grew up riding most of this trail either on a bicycle or motorcycle. I would guess that a fat bike would be the best weapon for this ride with the amount of sand in the desert or at least high volume tires depending on the exact route. The only bummer is going to be the heat that time of year, last year was well into the 100's in Phoenix at 1000' Elevation. the salton sea is -30 or so and always hotter than Phoenix. Even the oroflame area was hot last year around that time. I am planning to ride to Slab City in the next couple weeks, i ll check out that route north of there. I remember riding it on a motorcycle once before and wished i had a paddle tire, but there are a few roads going north from mammoth wash some were harder than others. Is there a GPX file for that route yet? Sounds way cool.

It is time for me to thin the herd to make way for some new hobbies so i am selling off some of my bike collection and parts. This is a hand made frame bag made just for a the 08 style fisher rig / paragon style frame size L or 19". I made it myself, it is i think the 10th or so bag i have made so it is a good one. Made from heavy denier (800 i think) it will last. I have one on my main bike that never comes off with well over 5000 miles with no issues. Having one of the name brands in the past, i prefer this material. it has a small side and a big pocket side both with 2 zips into one large compartment. so no dividers, this frame is not big enough. American flag proudly displayed on the side. asking $65 and shipping cost.

stuff that may or may not also be for sale.....

09 paragon 29er size L frame in great shape white with head set

08 complete surly pugsly, grey, 3x9, blaze cranks, juicy 3, x7 for the rest. size 18, M. decent tires, it also has a frame bag i will part with. it was one of my first so it is not pretty, but it works just fine.

make an offer with PM function.

thanks-JIm

I think it was Elk pass last year where i got my first thought that i may be in deep... I remember a super sponge like ground that held on to my tire like fly paper. I stopped twice to see if my brakes were locked up. I remember thinking that i could have walked faster than i was moving, but my pride would not allow it. The downhill run on the flip side was so beautiful and fun that it seemed totally worth it. I could not imagine passing that in snow. I remember quite a few fallen trees on the down hill side that made things interesting. This is going to be a fun one to watch.. If you hurry, you can catch a parade in Elkford sat am around lunch..... if it is an annual event that is. Wish i could be there... Good luck to all!!

13  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Suitable Cassette/Chainring ratios for Bikepacking/GDMBR? on: April 25, 2011, 01:07:13 AM
Hey

I can only tell you about the canadian section. I was also under the impression that most of the climbs were quite tame. I was mistaken. That 5-7% is just an average. there are many shorter grunts all over the place that dont show on the profile, and a few power line roads, Snow, Mud, rain. At about mile 70 there is a wicked power line climb that is steep all by itself, add in the sponge like ground that did everything it could to prevent your wheel from spinning, and all your gear. All that with 100+ miles in your legs.  I have no idea how the SS guys do it. IMO lower is better. I never had the need for the tall gears because my plan was to coast as much as i could, whenever i could. If you are non human like Matt and Kurt then go with the taller gears. If you are indeed human, i would give yourself the option.

good luck!

IMO= If i had to choose from 2 fronts i would go with a 20/30 in the front and the 12/36 in the back. If you cant get the 20/30 to work then the normal 22/32 will work fine also. On my short attempt at the TD last year i used every gear i had at least twice and i had a 23/30/40 with the 12/36 in back (29er). Most of my time was spent in the 1/1 ratio, but later in the day's i used the 20/36 a bunch. Never wished i had a taller gear.

Best o luck

It is just my opinion. 200 as a minimum each. The daytime high today was just under 90 and is projected to be in the upper 90's by friday. Humidity as always was low. There are 30 mile stretches of desert that can take 5-6 hours for a solid rider with no issues. I always recommend that you play it safe when it comes to water in the desert. Many can do with less, but why chance it. The penalty for failure is quite high. I would hate to see anybody get hurt out there.

Just my opinion. Have a good time out there!

Seems like water would be doable, I can carry 2 100 oz bladders if that's needed, we'll have 3 water bottles between us. Logistically we need to start near Tucson or Flagstaff as we will be bringing our dog on the trip and need to board her in one of those two cities.

What do you Guys think?

IMO- you may want to reconsider your H20 in this area.( Gila area ) 200oz + 3 bottles is enough for one person out there. There is H20 out there but it is easy to miss, easy to get lost, and it may not be good or working. Don't let the miles fool you, it is rough country. Expect temps in the 90's and no shade all day. It will be a good time!

Desert survival tip..... the bee's will lead you to the water..... If you find yourself in the area of a known spring but cant find it, listen for Bee's buzzing, they are never far from water.

Question for those that know lemon...

I am trying to put my gear together for the 300. If weather is like it has ben the past few days here in Arizona, what can you expect on top of Lemon and other higher elevations? i have never been on Lemon. I am going to try and ride the Lemon - Oracle section before the start to get a better idea. Looking at clothing, sleeping options.

Thanks- JF

I like the mac & cheese idea! I seem to have found my magic pill here this month.... Taco Bell bean burros and chia seeds. I found that since there is really nothing organic in a Tao Bell bean burro they stay good for a long time without refrigeration. I was out on an all day ride a couple weeks back and had one with me. I was about dead at 8 hours in. I took a sit and broke out my burro. 15 min later..... I felt almost brand new again! and it lasted for about 2.5 hours! I am sure the Don Miguel burros have a similar effect.

I have discovered chia seeds. Yes, the same seeds as the little toys. They claim to regulate sugar, give time release energy, and extend release water. I have to say i believe it. Turns out the Aztec hunters would take only a handful of chia seeds with them on there extended hunting expeditions. They also have more omega-3 than flax with no grinding required. Got a jar at vitamin world for 15$.

Also on a side note, In an attempt to do the best i can at the AZT this year i have gone on a low-r carb diet in an attempt to get below 200LBS before the start. 7 days in i am down 4 lbs to 211. I also feel great with loads of energy, although i find that i need about 20-25 grams of carbs per hour on rides longer than 2 hours. My basic plan is to limit daily carbs to less than 100 per day + 25 per hour +/- of riding over 1 titrated to effect ( 4 power bar blast chews ). If i stick to 100G/ day tends to limit my Cal / day to 2-2500 by default. It is very similar to the P90X nutrition plan. I also follow every ride >2 hours with a choco milk. I have to say that at one week in i already feel the results in the pedals and i am now more in tune with my bodys needs. I did some research on the subject. There are a few theories out there that claim training with a low carb diet and racing with high carbs is an effective tool for maximizing carb usage. For another look at the subject check out a documentary called Fat Head, a take off from super size me.
