Thank you!
The durability has me worried a bit also. All the gravel/adventure bikes look like they can take a serious beating in the promotional videos, but taking beatings over 2700 miles is another thing.
That said, I'm not a frequent buyer of bikes (still riding my 1995 MTB), and I've successfully put off riding the TD since reading about it in that Outside article, so I have plenty of time to mull it over.  ;-)

So quiet here. This time last year we were in page 4 already. Any thoughts on gravel bikes for the TD? (just to get things rolling, pun intended)

Um, that makes more sense to me than messing with people's FB pages...

Ever cared to dig in the history of the TD race?
In 2009 Erik Lobeck caught giardia south of Pie Town. He had to withdraw. Next year he returned and gave Matthew Lee a strong battle until his rear derailler ripped off in the sticky mud on the Old Bannack road. He finished in joined 2-3 position, but was later disqualified because he had made a move against the rules to get his derailler repaired.
In 2009 Per Eklof hit a pothole 30 miles south of Silver City. He never saw the finish line.
In 2011 Justin Simoni crashed on the CDT alternate, some 15 miles north of Silver City. He had showed true TD spirit by going in the snow-covered Flathead valley, bypassed by all other racers. He didn't get to the finish line.

The key thing there is they did not finish...the Krafts are going to...I felt bad for Justin in 11 Eklof in 09 but... they did not finish, no fault of there on.

You're actually supporting Dumpsters message with your list of race-ending problems. There is so much cr$p that can happen during the race that throwing additional and arbitrary stuff like a random cutoff isn't actually necessary.
And yes, most of the racers are more likely chasing personal goals rather than winning this race, and they may not even care if they're listed anywhere. It would be a shame nonetheless if, after overcoming all problems, the cutoff would be the sole reason to not have them listed as finishers.

Peter Sr sent me a text and said they are going to finish sometime hopefully in the morning if all goes well. Peter is a great guy on and off the bike, I hope all goes well for them...Just think if there was a cut off they would not be able to get a finishing time. With the problems they have had and are pulling through it would be ashamed to get cut...they are what the whole tour is about!

+1. Go Krafts!!

Looking forward to immersing myself in the TD for the next month or so. A big thanks to everyone involved, and good luck to all the racers!

Yea, it does look like Jo Ann B is rockin' a cross bike.  Didn't someone else attempt this on a cross bike?  Maybe, Fixie Dave...prior to being Fixie?  I remember someone saying, never again would they try it on a cross bike.
Someone in this or the pre-race thread mentioned Deanna Adams rode a cross bike in 2009, a fixie no less. She deviated from the route and was relegated,  but she did make it to AW.

Today's the day (at least in my time zone).
Good luck to all riders, be speedy and safe!

Longtime lurkmeister here -
I just got my copy of The Cordillera, and Yea!, Jon Billman is still in it!

And while I'm finally posting something (I should have done this much sooner): A giant thank you to all racers for the excitement and inspiration you've provided!
