A buddy and I just completed the main route starting in McCall and riding clockwise. We left McCall in the afternoon on July 11th and finished July 17th.  Ran into the fire outside of Idaho City so we had some smoke to contend with but otherwise nothing major to report. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. We had a great time!

Thanks Casey!  We are looking forward to this route.  Starting out on July 11th.  Should be awesome.  Thanks for all of your work on this.

We are starting July 11th as well. Leaving from McCall and going clockwise. Enjoy the trip!

Casey,

I have my map set and I am planning on doing the main route starting early July.  How frequent is water available on the main route? It appears like there are ample streams available but I want to verify. I am planning on bringing 5 water bottles and a empty 3L bladder if things get iffy.  Does this sound adequate given your experience on the route? I wouldnt think it would get to hot given the elevation but im not sure...i want to be prepared. Thanks so much for putting this together, looking forward to it!
7  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Arm coolers on: July 01, 2013, 09:38:07 PM
I wear the smart wool arm warmers almost daily when it is 50 degrees or cooler on my morning commute. Either with a shirt or under my gore jacket for added warmth. Love them except for the material has started to unravel after only a year. Got them at REI and might exchange them but I feel a bit guilty as I've used them at 365+ times so probably not.

I always carry one of those small cable locks that come with a new pistol. They are light weight, fairly robust for the size and I have a half dozen around by default. I keep the key in my wallet. It stows away unnoticed in my frame pack but readily available if needed. Still always keep your bike in sight!
9  Forums / Question and Answer / sit bone pain on bike packing trip on: June 30, 2013, 08:11:20 PM

So I went on my first bike packing trip this week and it was amazing aside from the pain that developed in my sit bone area after the first 8 hours or so. I am a die hard commuter and ride 2-3 hours a day year round with no real issues. I am riding a WTB Rocket V saddle with compression shorts and athletic shorts over top. I sometimes wear Pearl Izumi Elite shorts but the padding causes chafing on my inner legs after a couple hrs.  I rode 160 miles over two days on this trip and the pain became so intense I had to stand the last 50 or so. I experienced zero numbness or other issues. No sores or chafing, just the tissue over my sit bones felt destroyed. Is this something you can work through?? I want to do the tour divide someday and this experience was pretty disconcerting. Thanks for any help! BTW I have tried a ton of saddles and the Rocket V has been the best as far as eliminating numbness etc.

Just curious if anyone knows what is up with Marco Nicoletti? His marker has been at the junction of 324 and Medicine Lodge Rd for 24 hours now. Maybe his Spot batteries died.

According to his Facebook update this morning he is out of the race due to ankle issues. Bummer!
