What a race this year. Kudos to everyone who saddled up and had the courage to tackle it.

Here's my analysis of JB and JJ last night.  It can be a little hard to tell from the race flow since Jesse didn't turn his SPOT back on (or get a point) until the bottom of Fooses.

I think Jesse stopped somewhere after 11pm, still on top of the crest.  Jefe continued on another hour to the bottom of the trail, before sleeping 1.5 to 2 hours.  Jesse appears to have taken a longer rest, 3-4 hours, before dropping down Fooses.  Jefe was 1.5 hours ahead of him at the crossing of Highway 50, due to sleeping less.

Jefe is now ~10 miles ahead, all uphill road miles.  So the gap is closing.  This is a good, good race developing!

As someone who's watching and really interested but has a hard time figuring out what's happening, I appreciate the Paul Sherwin role you're playing here, Scott.

Finally got the laptop out so I can see the blue dots. Cannot believe how far Jesse and Jefe are already. Insane. They must be really eager to breathe some smog in Denver.

Turns out my wife is going to owe me one, so I may be able to do some of this ride with you guys.  Not the whole thing, but I'm thinking I may be able to get away with riding Flag to Mingus and then have a buddy come shuttle me back to Prescott.

How can this thread not have any replies?  You boys have tapped into it... every mtn biker's dream.  Even all the log-hoppers, table toppers and downhill skid kids... even though they don't know it, this kind of riding is the pinnacle of off-road riding.

Mike retired.  He's living off of Mike & Ike's in the Ohio backcountry.

Spot Brand singlespeed 29er, rigid.  Carousel Design Works bags (and a backpack).  Keep the setup light at about 10-14 lbs in the backpack and 8-10 lbs on the bike (dry). 

I would be embarrassed to reveal how many internet forums I've frequented over the past several years... I, too, would stand 100% behind a forum policy that strictly forbids political talk or any even remotely insulting or offensive discussions.

It's really easy for those discussions to take on a life of their own and create a whole bunch of ill will, while the perpetrators of the discussion cry "free speech" and "censorship" when they're reprimanded or their threads closed. 

So far, this isn't an issue at all... the people at BP.net seem like a really great bunch.  But this type of adventuring is gaining steam and this forum will definitely grow. 

I personally would like to see a sub-forum devoted to Food exclusively.

You rock.  Wish I could talk my wife and kids into moving back to Alaska, but it ain't happening.  And we're too destitute to afford a visit anytime soon.

Sorry to steer this thread so far OT...

These races will likely be very small, underground (though open to all who want to come), and very short (90 minutes).  Unsanctioned (but insured).  Maybe a $25 entry to cover costs (probably t-shirts and insurance, FS permit, if we can get one). 

We may tweak this concept (or completely revamp it) after the first race, but for now we're thinking of something to capture the vibe of bicycle culture... something that frankly is missing in this town.  I moved out West from Bloomington, Indiana (by way of Alaska)... B'ton is an insane cycling town, like a mini-Portland.  I'd love to foster that same sort of bicycle-oriented community in Prescott, so we'll see what we can whip up.  It will include a party.

Good excuse for people to visit Prescott and do their Whiskey pre-ride, too.

We'll definitely make room for people with gears!  Would love to have ya, Scott.

That's very helpful-  thanks a bunch.  We'll reconsider our options and probably push the ride back 3-4 weeks.  Or, more likely, find another trip to do and hit KT in Autumn '09 instead.  I'll definitely be hitting you up.

Prescott is hurting for mtn bike events.  The Epic Whiskey is a lot of fun but it needs a good injection of some grassroots, punk rock, non-HR monitor, PBR vibes to really satisfy the appetite of the people I ride with.  We love the Whiskey, but need something else. 

Singlespeed-focused (but not exclusive probably) races are being planned for Spring and Fall in Prescott.  A non-profit, pro-anarchy kinda deal.   

I'll keep you posted... would love to have you come for the inaugural Prescott Cat O' Nines in the Pines!

Thanks- a friend was saying we'd need reservations.  If March is considered early for the Kokopelli, then maybe crowded campgrounds are the last thing we should be worrying about. 

As for the snow near Moab, how bad might it be?  We have come to expect a good amount of hike-a-biking on our UL trips.  If there's going to be a foot of snow or something, that sounds rather unpleasant, but if it's must a matter of a few inches here and there and the associated runoff from the melt and some mud... we're fine with that.

We have a narrow window to run the Kokopelli since there is a big local race in Prescott in mid-April and we're hoping to put on a small grassroots single speed race the last week of March, otherwise we'd push the KT trip back a few weeks.

We're going to run Kokopelli's in March and I am wondering if anyone here has details about the camp reservations I've heard people mention. 

Who takes the reservations?  A number of different organizations, or a single org?

How far in advance do you have to make reservations, generally?  Hope we aren't too late for March. 

Any other beta would be appreciated.

I run 29" wheels and found that the increased wheel diameter (and the associated decreased rolling resistance) is even more apparent when you are pushing your bike on hike-a-bike sections. 

A couple weeks ago we did the CT, Silverton-Durango via Rico-Silverton Trail... we got a lot of practice pushing.
