I can't recommend the seat cover enough. Mine held up fairly well on our 1,100 mile trip to the arctic last winter/spring.

As of now the film is only available through Vimeo On Demand. I am very curious about any issues you may have with this service. Does Vimeo not work for you for some reason? Is the interface confusing? Any feedback you may have would be helpful. Also, I do plan to make it available on itunes eventually but I plan to keep it exclusive on Vimeo for the time being. Thank you for your support.

I was asked by Ground Truth Trekking to write a gear review of the equipment Kim and I used on our recent fat-bike expedition to the arctic of Alaska.

Hope you enjoy and perhaps find it useful.

Last summer my friend Brent and I caught a ride on a cargo ship headed for the far shore of Alaska's Cook Inlet. Once deposited, we spent the next ten days fat-biking and packrafting through mountainous terrain, tundra, brush, and beaches along Alaska's largest lake, down the Kvichak River to Bristol Bay.

With professional musician Mark Teckenbrock and graphic artist Skyler Kline we have created a film from that trip - 'Hunting For Monsters' which is now available on Vimeo On Demand.

Please watch, enjoy and share.

My partner Kim and I have recently returned from a 1,000+ mile fatbike expedition to the arctic of Alaska.

While underway, I tried to update the 'journal' on my website. Since returning, I have re-edited the journal to read from the beginning and have added photos to each entry.

asatrur- thank you. Mjölnir in the name of Thor's hammer. I have attached my own significance to Mjölnir and if you really want to know, I think of my camera as my Mjölnir - hence, Mjölnir-of-Bjørn.

Addy- thank you. Glad you like it. There are a few more pre-trip posts I would like to generate before we leave. I hope to be able to post updates to the website as we go and if all goes as planned we will carry a DeLorme Inreach which will show our progress.

Southwestbackcountry- my digital scale is on the fritz so I was unable to do my own weighing. The 2lbs is based off Titanium Goat's information and that is stove and pipe.

I have written a blog post about retrofitting a mid shelter to work with a Titanium Goat wood stove.

Sean, that's an interesting idea. I have never seen it employed so I have no clear idea how it would work but I think the main drawback would be that the tether would have to be so long that it would become annoying. I have had very little trouble with snow getting into the mitten because as you say, when they are hanging the opening lays flat. However, if a little snow does get in I just turn it upside down and bang it out. Usually when it is super cold the snow does not melt inside and it shakes free. We both use vapor barrier knee high socks in our winter biking footwear but I have not, so far, used vbl gloves. It may be a good idea for some but for me, my hands are typically ovens and I imagine they would be grossly wet within the vbl. Instead, I just regulate layers and try to keep my hands from overheating. When everything is working as it should, the little snow that gets in stays frozen and does not cause a problem, so far.

I am really excited to be using the Titanium Goat wood stove this winter, as it will greatly improve evaporation of damp, frozen and wet clothing and sleeping bags. Moisture is inevitable and I really like the idea of not depending on reliance of having to head indoors to address damp gear. It's all theory at this point though.

Let me know if you try the tether on the tip of mittens. I would be curious if it works.

Happy new year. Hope you are getting good biking/skiing in.

Jehsohn- thank you. Like I said in the post, I had my original pair of Yupik Eskimo mittens to look at for patterning but this was my first attempt at building fur mittens from scratch.

The pattern on this blog is slightly different from mine but they are both basically following the same concept.
I had originally intended to photograph each step and really lay it out but I was also filming video to be used in our film about our upcoming adventure to the arctic. There were just too many tasks going on so I focused on sewing and more video.

Thanks again and may your hands be warm in the new year.

The Homer Cycling Club's Big Fat Bike Fest is a great time to come to Alaska - just sayin.

I titled this one 'Storm Ride'. It was one of the rare times when the tail wind was so strong that we did not need to pedal while riding fatbikes on the beach.

nick- I really enjoyed your post. The only point I would disagree with is when you you say you shouldn't talk about it. Simple overnighters are, for me, often the best remedy for stress relief and rebooting, so to speak, perspectives. Your post, I believe, is just the thing some of us need to read. To be reminded how easy and important it is to take a reprieve, jump on the bike and let it lead us to a new perspective and outlook. Again, great post.

SingleCell- Thank you for the compliment. The fish is a sockeye salmon. We were in an area of Alaska that is considered the worlds largest sockeye salmon spawning grounds. In this same area there is a proposed open pit mine (Pebble Mine), that if developed would also be the worlds largest. Needless to say this is very a controversial issue here in Alaska.
