2005 Surly Pugsley (XL) $1300
Notes:
The Good--This old frame has the old geometry (HUGE triangle) that can fit a HUGE framebag (not included). All hubs and bearings (including derailleur pulley wheels) have been recently serviced with Phil Wood grease. There is a NEW freehub body on the 26x100 rear wheel. New Hayes hydraulic disc brakes. Carbon seat-post and handlebars. Two wheel sets (26x100 & 29x23) and a THIRD SET OF RIMS (26x82)! Also includes Surly Black Floyd tires for cruising fat and sassy around town
The (kinda) Bad--The 100mm rims are made by Choppers U.S. While they are very ride-able, they are in pretty rough shape. Whoever drilled them did a terribly uneven job...and after the red paint job. There are a few nipple holes that are cracking, and a few dings along the edges. That said, THEY STILL RIDE FULLY LOADED and I ride them all the time. ALSO INCLUDED ARE LIGHTLY USED SURLY HOLY ROLLING DARYL RIMS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE!!!
The Ugly--This frame is solid but ugly. It was originally purple, rattle-canned black, and now has lots of wear. Somebody did some sort of modification to the seat tube water bottle cage mounts that has me baffled and renders it unusable (easily re-drilled to fix). It has some surface rust, but no notable dents, kinks, or brakes. It is as you would expect a 13 year old fat frame to look (shrugs).
Conclusions--Powder coat her nose, lace the Daryl rims, and take her to the ball! This bike gives you lots of options. It's a sweet, simple, serviceable build. I would suggest Lacing the Daryls for snow, and then keeping the 100s for beach and mud riding. It's nice to have a beater wheel set for corrosive conditions.
Pictures--I honestly don't have any and the bike is about 100 miles away in a storage unit right now. I'll work on it this week and post some when I can.
Video--Here is some video with pretty good view of the wheels. I run it sans front derailleur in the sand, but it has since been re-mounted.
http://youtu.be/wioaShfmjiIShipping--This is a two box endeavor with all the wheel stuff. You pay for the more expensive of the two.
