Looking for a ride to Denver-

I'm hiking the CO Trail this summer as opposed to riding it.  I'm in Del Norte (about 45 minutes east of Wolf Creek) and hoping to get a ride to Waterton Canyon. Saturday will work fine for me. If any D-go folks are heading over I'd be glad to share gas money and driving. Text or email.  Thanks!!!

Would prefer a Fargo V2 fork with all the braze-ons or maybe an Ogre fork. Will consider others too. Whatcha got?

This is Gary Blakley in Del Norte.  Patti and I are listed on ACA's map as a stop for bike repair and lodging (free).  We won't be be available for TD racers this year as we leave in June for a year long bikepacking and backpacking trip.  I want to let TD racers know ahead of time so you can make other arrangements.  Best of luck to all of you!!!
12  Forums / Ultra Racing / Re: Single Speed for TD on: December 14, 2012, 05:40:28 AM
I was just talking about an interesting idea for SS situations like TD and other long-distance bikepacking races/routes. What about running a multi-speed hub with spacers set up so you can have two cogs, like a 16T and a 20T. Then when you have those long sections of flat/downhill you can simply switch over to the smaller cog. You'd have to have two speed links in your chain so you could change the length easily (which would add an admitted weak spot in the chain) but just from a conceptual standpoint I'm intrigued by the idea. Very minimal weight for gaining another gear but keeping the simplicity of SS.

I'd also always thought a cool set up would be to use an old derailleur or tensioner and run a 2x1. A 32 and a 42 up front with just the front derailleur is pretty damn simple. Anyway, just some interesting thoughts. Not sure either of them are really practical.
That would be a dinglespeed.  I've been doing this since '06.  IMO, it makes SS practical.  I can ride roads and most 2-tracks in the higher gear and steeper trails in my lower gear.  If you have an EBB or sliding (or swinging) drop outs the shift only takes seconds once you get the technique down.  I run 32 and 35 in the front and 21 and 18 in the back.  The chain tension stays virtually the same on either combination.  For the Divide I'd choose to go with 20 and 17 in the back, keeping the same 32 and 35 rings in the front.
13  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Sil-nylon pack cover- Talon 11? on: November 14, 2012, 04:21:02 AM
With a pack so small would it not fit under your rain jacket or maybe buy a rain jacket 1 size larger than you normally wear.
That would save you the hassle of an extra piece of gear to keep track of. Just a suggestion.

This is what I have been doing and it works OK.  I'm planning a year long trip next year and feel a pack cover will be worth having.  Not an issue in CO but in warm and humid climates I may not want to wear a rain coat but will still want to keep the pack contents dry.  I've also done the garbage bag inside the pack but find it's sort of a pain to move everything and empty the pockets.

Thanks, CCB.  Unfortunately, the reviews claim it fits loose on the Talon 22.  It would be way to big for the 11.

Does anyone know of an off the shelf sil-nylon pack cover (for rain) that fits the Osprey Talon 11 well?  I can make one if I need to.  Fit is important.  Thanks!
16  Forums / Question and Answer / Re: Nano TCS durable? on: October 17, 2012, 05:42:44 AM
I had them put on in Steamboat and they worked great all the way to AW. Still good tread left on them.

Thanks Rob.  I just saw that the WTB TCS tires don't play well with Stan's rims so they aren't an option for me anyway.
17  Forums / Question and Answer / Nano TCS durable? on: October 16, 2012, 10:08:25 AM
I know that in TD 2011 quite a few riders had sidewall cuts (running tubeless) and rapid wear who were using Nanos.  We were touring the GDMBR south to north this year and noticed quite a few riders running the new Nano TCS.  Are the sidewalls more durable on the TCS model than the non-tubeless ready version?  Does the tread last longer than the non-tubeless version?

The old Nanoraptor worked great for years for a lot of people.  More TD's and GDR's have been won on it that any tire around, I think.  Too bad it's gone.  The Nano looks the same as the Nano-Raptor but is a different tire altogether.  I've had really good luck with Saguaros for GDMBR type touring and probably will continue to use them but I'm curious if the latest Nano TCS is as close to as good as the old Nanoraptor.

Update for Del Norte:

Patti and I (Gary) are on the ACA Divide map as a place to stay and get bike repair in Del Norte, CO.  We will not be here for this years race as we'll be touring the GDMBR starting tomorrow.  We're riding south to north from Del Norte to Banff.  Stop and say hi when you pass if you have time.

The other local sources for bike parts are Alpine Bike and Ski, 719 873-2495.  Walter is willing to deliver parts to Del Norte, He's in South Fork which is 15 miles away.  AMPeirce bicycles http://ampeircecycles.com/ 719 580-4525.  Andy is a custom frame builder and has some parts and will also be willing to deliver if he's around.  After you leave here there really aren't any bike shops until Silver City (or Salida if you're north bound).

As of yesterday (5/28) Indiana Pass is dry but there are still a few snow drifts in the Ellwood Pass area.

It is legal to sleep in the town park which is immediately south of the river and just west of 112 where you cross.  The Country Family Inn motel is said to be a dump, not really recommended unless you really want a room.  The historic Windsor Hotel has just opened (pricey) but they are booked as there's a movie being filmed in the area and they're using the whole hotel.  Boogies cafe has reasonably priced diner food.  The Organic Peddler has good healthy food but small portions for us.  Jack's Market is on the east end of town and has a decent variety of groceries.  I think they're open from 7AM-10:00PM.  There are 2 gas stations with a subway in one and hot pizza in another.

Best of luck to all of you.  Ride safe!

Hello,

1.  Is this the regular Quarter Dome 2 person or the Plus version?
2.  Does it come complete with original tent bag, stakes, guy lines - anything missing?
3.  Does it come with the footprint?
4.  Any odors - has it been smoked in?

Thank you,
Darcy

Hi Darcy,  It is the regular length, not the long.  Everything original is included, stuff sacks, stakes, lines, tensioners, etc.  I forgot to mention that we also have the footprint for it, which has only been used one night.  It allows for a 'fast fly' pitch which means you don't use the tent body, just the fly and groundsheet.  We don't smoke and it's never been damp for any period of time, no odors.  No extra charge for the footprint and I'll pay for freight.  If interested email me at gcblakleyATgmail.com.  I can give you my ebay name and you can check my feedback.  I could also give you some references from people I know personally from this forum.  Thanks!

Bought new in 2011.  Used around 30 nights.  Other than some dust it's in pretty much as new condition.  Well cared for and not abused.  Check REI's site for specs and reviews.  This is a great double wall tent.  Pitches quick and easy once you figure the poles out.  Freestanding.  My wife bought this tent for her GDMBR ride.  We're doing the rest of the route this year together and have decided on a single wall tent to save a bit of weight.  200.00 or best offer.  Includes US shipping.  If anyone is really serious I can take some photos.
