I've got almost this route planned for my own June trip.  I had intended to study the area a lot, but then decide day to day where to ride.  However, the western half of that is very very close to my general plan-  amazingly close.

I will be leaving from Rochester MN on the 11th and heading up through Wausau and then over to lake Michigan and up OR leaving from Wausau after racing the WORS race on the 12th.  After hitting the lake I had planned generally on riding to Marquette, Houghton, Copper Harbor and then back down along the lake.

I also intend to race in the Keweenaw Chain Drive on the 19th (likely more of a "tour" after the 550-900 miles I'll have ridden the week before.

I'd be more than happy to join up for part of this.

I will need to get back to southern MN (or at least close) by the end of the 26th.

We might be getting somewhere near a full loop around lake Michigan!

I emailed my input.

It sounds like some of your new ideas are close to what I was looking for change wise.

4  Forums / Routes / June trip- Southern Minnesota-Copper Harbor-Marquette-Duluth-S MN route pieces? on: January 31, 2011, 09:59:20 PM
I've got 17 or 18 days to go exploring from Rochester MN.  Riding mountain bike for this one (intend to race the keweenaw chain drive in the middle of this trip).

Absolutely want to make it to Copper Harbor, Houghton, Marquette, Cable in order to ride singletrack.  Also, would like to route through Ironwood as I have friends there so access to showers/kitchen/post office box etc..

I have detailed notes on the Trans-Wisconsin route and can use some of that to guide me (this trip will be instead of trans-wisconsin for me this year, but will maybe get to do a solo run at it in the fall).  Got anything else to help route wise?

Well, my route was crap and I didn't follow it anyways.  I did ride almost 240 miles between Rochester and Wisconsin Dells though and I took a few pictures-

If someone else is looking to make a similar trip I could surely tell you a few places that are good to ride and a few that I would avoid-  feel free to email me or pm me etc.

I see that-

all the above link was supposed to be was what google bike gives you if you punch in Rochester, MN to Barneveld, WI.

It gives two options-  the northern route hits a lot of railtrail and is likely relatively flat and easy.  The southern route could easily be modified to have a ton of gravel and hills.

I will likely ride a variation of the northern route this week-  goals are to test gear and enjoy myself more so than ride a lot of hills this week (dirty kanza is coming up fast)

I will certainly blog about whatever I wind up doing and also post the garmin "tracks" for whatever route I do

quickly used google maps...

northern option allows more trail usage, but not sure where I'd stop after day 1 (150 miles or so in?)

southern is more roads, but has a logical stopping point at prairie du chien and also could be slightly modified to pick up some more gravel and bike trail using routes I already have from here to decorah etc.

thanks for any input

Looking to make a two day one-way trip riding out of Rochester and down to Madison-  thinking I will head south and cross at or below lacrosse and the  driftless zone.  A route into central wi and then down through the dells would also work.

anybody got anything?

are the tour divide rules going to be a close approximation of the rules for this?

how will the maps be given to us?  I don't even have a working gps at the moment and honestly don't really like them (when I go ride alone I like to get lost)
