Hi there,

First time racer here. Where and how do you stash your extra stuff(30L backpack with my personal stuff) at the finish in Picketpost? I know local racers have their vehicles parked in Picket. How about out of towners?

Thanks.

Re: Four Peaks option

A buddy & I rode the portion from Four Peaks Rd. up to the AZT and over to Sunflower y'day. The good news? There is still plenty of water on that section, we had about 6 flowing water crossings on Four Peaks Rd. alone, then for the first time I actually saw a flowing Boulder Creek, complete with waterfalls & pools!! Sycamore Creek is also flowing well currently. Will these still be flowing in 4 weeks?? Who knows, but there was still a substantial amount of snow on the north facing slopes of Four Peaks. Sycamore Creek is a reliable water source.

The bad news? Not really bad per se, but to anyone giving this option a whirl, just know that the climb up Four Peaks Rd. is no joke. It's around 17 miles with some fairly steep grades. The road has been recently graded, so there's that. Up top where FP Rd. joins the AZT along the Mazatzal Divide, that dirt road is fine. Some punchy climbs (Read: possible HAB), and a couple of long bumpy descents. It's a beautiful ride. Now the nitty gritty of the AZT singletrack portion into Sunflower. It's 8 miles from where it leaves the jeep rd. down to AZ87. Take note: There's a short HAB to start, then a fun downhill with some exposure into the Boulder Creek drainage. We were able to trim/clean up the first 1.1 miles from the jeep rd, but that took about 2 hours. It was getting late, so we pushed on. The next 1/2 to 3/4 mile of the AZT is a complete mess, be warned. Expect to HAB through thick vegetation & hop over rocks. It's like a flat version of the Oracle Ridge HAB for reference. Once you begin to exit the Boulder Creek drainage, the trail begins to open up. There's still vegetation crowding the trail corridor, but much more rideable. There are plenty of on/off/on sections as the trail contours in/out of small side drainages.

Those final 8 miles took us almost 4 1/2 hours, albeit about 2 hours were spent trimming. Not sure I'll have time to get back up there for more trail work. I plan to contact the trail steward to see if any trailwork is scheduled. Next up, is a ride from Sunflower up & over on Gold Ridge trail in a couple weeks.

Are these all part of the 300?

Are you doing an out and back?

From Creel, it’s pretty straight forward going to Urique.

Can’t remember the distance but there were a lot of road constructions back then trying to paved all of it.

We did it several years backs unknowingly almost close to the Ultrarunning race. I think that was the year it was cancelled due to on-going narco turf war in the valley. Wife and I stayed in the gringo campspot for several more day after the event and tried to climb out of the valley via Guachochi but the locals did not let us go because that’s where the turf war was.

Honestly, it all depends in your risk-tolerance. That part of Mexico has always been dangerous. Narcotraficantes are omnipresent threat in Mexico but that doesn’t mean they’ll come out of nowhere and gun you down.

Hey ho! I'm doing the 350 this, my first ultra racing. I am a bit clueless about what kind of lighting do people use aside from the dyno hub/k-lite combo. I don't seem to read many discussions about it other than in passing. I read someone uses a Fenix PD35 from the previous year's thread.

I checked their website and that unit seems like a good choice for me but how do you mount it in your helmet? Cable ties?

I'm not sure if I want to invest in a dynohub+lighting because of the cost associated with it if I ship to Canada.

Thanks,

D

I use the Fenix-PD35 lights. They use the CR123 batteries and I get plenty of life out of those batteries. I run them on 2 with one on my helmet and 1 on the bar. I have the Fenix bar mount and I really recommend it.

how do you mount the Fenix in your helmet? Is there a mount adaptor or you just improvised?

THanks,

D

Bounce box or just leave old clothes in the shuttle, assuming you get signed up for Homegrown or some other paid service, tip the driver he may donate them or just trash.

You could always race the 300 and then spend time on tour. AZT to Flagstaff or even the South rim. Joining the Wild West route around the canyon and up to Jacob Lake and the AZT would make a fun ride.

This seems like a great compromise. Thanks!

This is my first dip into Long bikepacking race. As a rook, I my rational mind says start with something short. Then again, I don't want to fly all the way down to AZ from Yukon and just do a 3-4 bikepacking trip.

I'll make a decision by monday. OTOH, I don't think it makes much a difference right? Maybe the details will but planning it will still be the same. I was hoping someone will be there in the finish to hand me two Big Macs and an ice cold Canada Dry even if I finish at 2 in the morning.

Cheers,

D

I'm planning my logistics pre and post race. Looks like riders from out of the country(like me) are in a bind in terms of how to get in and around AZ especially without knowing anyone. I'm trying to figure out where can I stash my stuff like clothes that I'll be wearing pre and post race.

How do you people go around with this? I can of course haul everything up of course but truly not ideal.

Grateful for any tips.

Hello,

Is anyone willing to lend their Spot for someone joining the Mass start? I have an Inreach and don't want to buy another locator unit. Or can trackleaders rent one specifically just for this race?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Thanks.
