I've done a couple bike trips starting in Burns Oregon and going south. The most recent was just a few days ago and ended in Lakeview. I intended to get to Klamath Falls, but bad weather stopped me. Route was roughly Burns - Frenchglen - Beatys Butte - Warner Mtn - Adel - Lakeview. 5 days, maybe 250 miles, about 65% unpaved. Many route options to do less pavement, more or less remote, more or less elevation. GoogleEarth and some BLM maps is how I planned my route.
Besides weather (headwinds/rain), drinking water was the biggest issue for me. I carried about 6 liters, but didn't easily find water and did some backtracking off my preferred route because of this. Late summer/early fall might be about the driest time there. Roads are rough, with nobody else around. Navigation was tricky at times. Road surfaces were varied - smooth and firm, rough rocky, a little soft and sandy. Scenery is austere, some might say bleak. I hope to ride in the area more.
