Since I am 11 months out, I haven't really started much research, but would love to hear what people know, resources, etc.
Thanks!

Forums / Trip Planning / Need a partner / Oaxaca - late April

Hey all.
In the early stages of putting together 10-14 days of bikepacking around Oaxaca, Mexico in late April. Looking for route ideas and /or a partner(s). I've checked out Scott's route on Spokes and Words and the route on bikepacking.com. I'd ideally put together a loop in and out of Oaxaca City. And of course there would be special attention paid to mezcalerias.
I'll be riding a surly wednesday and am not too concerned with speed and distance - other than putting together an awesome route, sampling mezcal, and eating good food. That said, I'm excited to push myself, bikepacking in Mexico. I have a strong backpacking/mountaineering/international-travel background (as a instructor and guide), and some bike touring. This would be a first for bikepacking on a fatbike.
So, share away - whatcha got?!? And who wants to join in on the fun???

so true! This is a pretty amazing push. Right on Lael! Gotta say Lael is a Superwoman. You can't get much more solo than this effort. It must get so lonely out there. Super athletic ability plus super mental focus equals superhuman outcome.

I had done no math. I was just being optimistic!
But now that you mentioned it I scratched out the following:
- Lael's avg speed so far including sleeping = 1652m/110.75hrs = 14.9mph - avg speed needed to match JK's time = 1100m remaining/68.75hrs = 16mph
So she needs to go 1.1mph faster on average to tie the overall record.
I don't know the course well enough to say whether the terrain allows for that without cutting into sleeping [is the southern part of the course slower or faster than the north bit?], but she can sleep less and/or she can ride faster.
It does seem at least possible.
I mean.... not everyone rides when they can't breath and are coughing up phlegm (and rides a pretty bad-ass race, round 1). I'm with you Vik -- it does seem possible!

Ok.... I have narrowed it down!
Either.... 1. Head out to Vancouver, down to Lopez Island to see a friend and then ride Vancouver Island 2. Go to Ireland and do something there 3. Head to Durango, chill with a friend and piece together a gravel/dirt road circuit there.
thoughts?! Anyone done anything in any of those areas? (Durango will be the easiest to piece together...)

Hi -- I would love to do a 8-10 day trip the first week of July - but where? I have done shorter trips by bike and have done extensive backpacking/mountaineering (so long days and backcountry camping are all good).
I ride a salsa vaya with rear panniers. I am coming from NYC, but happy to travel (train? plane?). Ideally this would be dirt roads and camping.
whatcha got?!

Hey NYC and SW Ct. friends -- looking to put together a trip the weekend of June 6th or June 20th - a loop between the Cold Spring train station and somewhere into Ct. with 2-nights of camping. Haven't put together the loop yet and am open to other suggestions (out to Long Island? Catskills?) - but looking for 1 or 2 other folks to go with.
Let me know if you're interested.

Forums / Question and Answer / Re: What bike do you recommend for bike packing (mountain biking + touring)

Yes -- Vaya has eyelets for front and back. Fargo has lots and lots of options -- you could carry back panniers and a frame bag and then water bottles in the front (which is the set-up I would ideally like). But, on the vaya, if I go with the frame bag, I would have to rig something up for the water bottles.
Though I am not so into the idea of buying another bike (for 2K), I think that I would rather be safe than sorry to have the Fargo to ride the dirt roads in SA that I am dreaming of!
