Hey everyone, I'm looking for good gloves for the CTR. They need to come in women's sizes and preferably as waterproof and warm as possible without being too bulky. Any recommendations would be awesome. Thanks!

Yes, a start date, preferably in July, would be greatly appreciated!

Any update on a date for the 2016 CTR?

Riding the wilderness areas still isn't legal on a unicycle is it?

No, it is not.  According to http://wilderness.nps.gov/faqnew.cfm, wilderness ares "do not allow motorized equipment, motor vehicles, mechanical transport"

A unicycle would be mechanical transport.

Waterton Canyon temporarily closed due to too many bear selfies

Evolution is much too slow.

The August version around the 14th would definitely kick me out.

Yes, me too. It might kick out quite a few, as family vacations are coming to an end and kids are going back to schools around that time.

And then there's monsoon season.  The weather this year was great.  Racers were very fortunate.

Hello,

Maybe a little bit too early but any idea when the start date for the 2016 CTR will be fixed? I am asking because due to different reasons my wife has to tell her boss the rough date for the summer vacation next year. As it happened kids will be out of school at the same time. So we are roughly plan to spend our summer vacation in Colorado and I would like to participate at the CTR  icon_biggrin
If I compare the start dates of the past years I guess it will be around the 7th of August?? And the direction would be from Denver to Durango right?
Thanks!

Michael

I hope to do the CTR as well next year, but the date is an issue.  Tried two years ago, but had to bail for a variety of reasons.  I'm looking to get even next year.  Assuming you guys don't completely get dumped on, I would put my vote in for a mid to late July start.

If this hiker cared enough to track down Stefan and email him, it's a short step to be concerned that she might also email the CTF or relevant public lands administrators. These events won't benefit from that kind of attention or interference so it's a pretty clear responsibility for participants to go the extra mile to make nice with fellow trail users. I hope whoever that rider was steps up, gets the contact info from Stefan and cleans this mess up.

Agreed, it perceptions like this one that get bikes banned.

I'm looking for Neil Beltchenko.  Neil, I have a Silo for you from David Wilson.  If you happen to see this post, can you tell me the best way to find you Sunday?

Speaking of the bible, the official CTR web site says for the Collegiate Peaks detour we go:

"Left for 3 mi. on Clear Creek Road, right for 5.9 mi. on US-24, left on Rd-371 for 10 mi. on old railroad grade to B.V. Right on Main...etc."

Is it okay to continue on US 24 to main and then turn right, skipping the gravel road section? Guide book says it is acceptable, but don't know if it is CTR acceptable. Speed limit is 55, but shoulder is 6 feet wide.

I ran the X-Alp Pros in 2011.  Pretty good.  I then ran Shimano's M162 in 2013, and they were far superior.  I've found a new favorite shoe...
Well, can't say it doesn't freak me out a bit, but better to know now and prepare.  Like Sherpaxc, I'm coming from Flatlandia, so I will have little time to practice and will probably have to HAB even more.  I'm familiar with the terrain, but only from a BP perspective, not a mt biking one.  Need to adjust my thinking, and my training, for the summer.

Thanks, everyone, for their comments and advice, it all helps.

Again, not instilling confidence.  Oh well, better than sitting on the couch eating bon bons.

no sense in mending your soul after fooses only to have marshal and sargents tear it out and crush it again.

Wow, you guys are really making me think committing to this was a good idea.

Can anyone give me a good idea of where exactly the major HB sections are?

I don't. But a carry a boot (basically a big sticker that Park Tools sells), carpet needle & thread, and Super Glue.
Wow, so is the needle, thread and glue for sewing a ripped tubeless tire, or for fixing thread bare carpet you might encounter? Wink

I'm guessing the answer is no, but just wanted to check.

I didn't take his comment as a lecture back to you, only that a large section of people tend to "set it and forget it".  Never experimenting with anything on their bikes or other equipment.  You never know until you push something to failure.

I concur.  I'm new to my full suspension bike and when I first got it, thought man, this is a harsh ride.  After thinking some more about it I started playing with pressure settings of the shock, air in the system, etc, I realized that the shop had messed up some of the settings, pretty badly.  I have played with the tire pressure as well.  65 psi is way harsh and 25 pretty cushy.

Still need to play around with new tires and wheels.  Thanks for all the comments about what you run Smiley

Cool, thanks guys!

New question for ya.  Has anyone checked out these bars?  Goofy or useful?

Back for another go in 2014. Just made my entry fee donation to the Colorado Trail Foundation.

So glad this thread got some life again too...

Tires? Last year I used a big fat Maxxis Ardent 2.4 on the front and a 2.25 on the rear... both EXO protection.... no flats or tears or nothing, so I'll likely use that again.
I know this is a newbie question, but larger in front than in back?  I would think you would want more surface area in the back for better traction.

Newbie here again.  I'm guessing that if we are racing we need to do the recommended detours, like the Tarryall and not the 285 bypass?  Is that correct?

Hey Guys, I'm going to try the CTR for the first time this year.  I'm very excited and having a blast over thinking every detail.  My current fixation is on wheels.  I am planning on buying a new set of wheels for the trip, as well as other races I have coming up. I was looking at the Stan's tubeless Crest ZTR wheel set.  I'd love to hear people's opinions on their wheel, as well as tire choice....or point me to the right place in the forum.

Thanks!
