Forums / Question and Answer / Re: IGH Battle - Rohloff vs Shimano Alfine 11

Having used an alfine11 and now have a rohloff hub. I can honestly say the rohloff is the better choice. My alfine had a lot of problems holding oil and didnt like even being a millimeter out of adjustment for cable tension. this caused miss shifts occasionally and eventually one gear broke and was completely unusable. My rohloff has been amazing i've never had a problem with shifting and it has built in safeguards if you do happen to missshift on a climb. If you ever get an alfine, make sure its the Di2 version.

I bought a new spot gen3. Whats the process for activating it? Do I activate thru SPOT web-site and then thru trackleaders? Thank you.
Yes, exactly that process.

Forums / Question and Answer / Multitool/Pliers That Can Actually Cut A Spare Cable
|

Like the title says, I am looking for some kind of cable cutter / plier that is packable for a race like the GDMBR or AZT.
I bought a leatherman skeletool a long time ago and had to actually use the "cable cutter" part of it below the pliers and it barely worked at all. it the cut cable, but seriously frayed it and took a lot of work. Would not recommend.
Does anyone have any recommendations for this type of tool?

This has never once worked for me. I fly with my bike on average 2 or 3 times a year for the past 6 years. I could've bought a few bikes on the amount I've spent on the ridiculous bike fees airlines charge.
When I flew on US airways to canada and was checking in my bike. If I didnt open my big mouth and say it was a bike I would have gotten away with it. It never hurts to try and a lot of people do get away with checking in their bike as "an over sized box."

Selling my Reba fork. Recently rebuilt with new seals from a local bike shop. Has some very small scratches from normal use but they're mostly on the decals. Probably less than 1000 miles on this fork with most of it being on gravel roads. Including the shock pump that came with the fork. Steerer is uncut and star nut installed.
Asking $275 plus shipping

Tires tires tires…..Nanos are just plain wrong for the TDR, anyone who uses them will naturally have side wall failure on gravel roads, yup it says so right here on the WTB web site…. This is the #1 tire choice for Tour Divide, the longest mountain bike race in the world stretching from Canada to Mexico along the Rockies. It features an elevated centerline that rolls effortlessly on hard surfaces, numerous micro knob working edges providing lateral traction and predictability, and a voluminous casing designed to go the distance. It is no wonder why the Nano is ultra endurance mega athlete Jay Petervary's favorite tire.
I will be rocking nanos, just like 2010, as they just roll so incredibly fast compared to any other tire I have tried……… but darn and big gulp and knock on wood……….wont I feel like an idiot when the sidewall goes as it surely will….. guess I might carry something like this as my 1 luxury item… http://www.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-274-121-maxxliteI am running specialized fast track grid tires. Been doing a lot of overnighters and general trail riding and they are really fast with a good side wall protection.

Everybody has opinions here is mind,I don't think brakes or rotor sizes make much difference for the TDR as long as they are fresh and in good working order. But I really don't see why anyone would want to run 27.5 tires. Tires are the most likely thing your going to need and those are going to be the hardest to find. I mean you can get 26 or 29 inchers anywhere even Walmart , the tires I'm running I don't think they even make in 27.5. The TDR you want to roll dude it's not about nimble turning and quick acceleration. Like I said it's just my opinion.
I completely agree. Leave the min/maxing and most of your theory crafting to the people who wont sleep and want to race the TD. Pick 26 or 29, some bags and camping gear and go god damn ride.
