29er tubeless tires for Great Divide Route

After spending 5 days on the route this past July, I'd definately lean towards fast rolling,, of course durability.

I rode the Specialized Renegade Controls, with limited tread, they work well. But I think the durability would require replacement at the midway point.  I also see why the Nanoraptors are so popular. That center roling tread would work well.  I think they wear well, but it has been several years since I put miles on them.

I was reco'ed by MikeC the Bonty XR3, which worked very well on our tandem. We did run tubes, but the tire is tubeless ready. We ran the Comp version at 35-45 ppsi with a 270 lb team and around 90 lbs of gear and bike from Rooseville to Antelope Wells, and had life still left in them. We got a sidewall slice which barely penetrated and I was able to run it until the end with a rubber patch superglued on the outside. I'm thinking that's a pretty decent durability testimonial for someone on a single bike. Cheers...

For fast rolling 'touring' tires I'm a big fan of Maxxis ikons.

Only a small portion of the divide near Doyleville Co. when I toured the Colorado Trail in 2012 with a 2.2" ikon for the rear. Last year I toured around 1250 miles in Chile, including the Carretera Austral on 2.35" ikons and have done a couple more thousand miles of all types of riding including 100mile+ road rides on the ikons. I'm a fan. Try em out you may like them. My current trail riding tire set up in the North Shore is a 2.35" ikon rear and a Minion DHR for my front. 2.3" Many have used them on the divide with success.

I ran Specialized Ground Control Grid on TD2014, still riding them.  I'm at over 3200 miles on them, now.  2.1 in the rear, 2.3 in the front.  Not the sexiest or lightest, but they were recommended to me at the shop and elsewhere for their durability.  I'm willing to take a weight penalty for wear.  No flats, no sidewall cuts.

Last year I ran Specialized "The Captain", but couldn't get them this year.  Ground Control Grid are the current replacement.

If you read the Cordiellia (sp?), at least for 2013, you'll find a gear survey including tires ridden.  I think this info will be in the 2014 issue.
