What would happen if I put a 10 cog cassette on my bike and left the 9 speed xt cranks on?
The old Suntour thumb shifters should not have a problem with it.
would the 9 speed derailleur and cranks object?

The narrower 10 speed chain mating with the 9 speed chainrings is probably the real stumbling block--a bit of dermal work on might make it all work? If you try it post up your results

ahh, so the inner width of a 9 and 10 speed chain are the same?  humm that means the narrower 10 speed chain has to use thinner plates--didnt know that--so no 10 speed in my near term future

Yup, though "Most" manufacturers are reporting similar tensile chain strengths so *shrug*.  How many people go touring with 10speed road drive trains without issues?  How many were that concerned about 8speed vs 9speed chains?

For me, the main pain is lack of grip shift and easy to use quick links.

Instead of making a guess, ( sometimes I guess correct, sometimes incorrect).

Or, when I replace the LX 12 - 36 some time soon, what is the new and improved does not weigh a pound or more option, with a 36?

I think that depends on what rear derailleur/shifters you have. they are designed for either 9 or 10 speed i think

Haven't tried it personally but I've read plenty of accounts on MTBR of people using 10 speed chains with nine speed systems and nine speed cranks with new 10 speed kit.

If they're not indexed I would imagine a swap in cassette and chain would see you running 10 speed. Your shifter is controlling the movement of the derailleur through you manually "indexing" the amount of cable pulled.

I wanted to try a 1x setup. I have xt triple cranks, x9 long cage 9speed, x7 shifters, xt front derailleur. First I removed the shifter and derailleur. Next I removed the large and small chain ring. Didn't work. Had to keep the large chain ring on because the bolts are too long. No big deal, I just want try it out. Had a blast with it, but the chain did drop a lot. I kept riding it though and kept having fun. Saved the money and went with an x9 short cage rear derailleur and shifter (10 speed), plus an MRP chain guide and kept the xt cranks. It's been a lot of fun and I don't think I'll be changing back, though I will be adding a 30t and 34t chainring to the mix for different races.
