Hi all, I'm new to the whole idea and I would love to take my rockhopper out for a couple of days but I don't know if any bags will fit. It's a size small and I was looking at the revelate designs specs on sizing and I don't think I can fit a frame bag in the triangle. I also don't know if a seat bag has enough clearance. It looks like there's a spot for a rack on the rear but I tried putting one on and it doesn't even come close to fitting. Is there anything I can do save from buying a new bike?

There's always a way. Where do you want to go on your trip, what kind of gear are you starting with?
That is a perfect starting platform.

*For starters measure the space between your rear tire and seat rails, that will give us an idea on what to work with.
*Plenty of space in that triangle for something. More than most FS bikes.
*Bar rolls and harnesses or simply strapping dry bags to your bars carry tonnes of soft stuff; clothes or sleeping.
*Top tube packs, other auxiliary packs carry little things. Lot's of room on that bike for those.
*oh ya don't forget the trusty back pack. Often hated on, invaluable to get started.

Watch this vid from a few years ago for some 'no special bike bags required' stoke!

Thanks so much for the reply! Haha I was really hoping there was something I could do. The distance between the tire and the rails is just about 7 inches. Do you have any suggestions for frame bags? I knew the handlebars would be a great place to put stuff I was just worried about the rest of the bike really. I have an old osprey that has a 3L bladder in it that I was planning on using! Also that video was awesome. I've always loved Matt Hunter.

No worries.
*Seat bag I'd check out this one.... This is likely you're only/best option as most are going to require more than the 7" you've got to work with. I've got one of these, it's rad.

Scott's stuff is the best in my opinion.

*Frame bags off the shelf are a limited. Revelate does some, check their site for their sizing chart. You'd have to measure the triangle space on your bike and compare to their charts. Custom is always an option if you've got the funds and you can get exactly what you need to fit that space. Porcelain Rocket will do that for you if you want to go that route.

*For bar space the easiest and cheapest is strapping a stuff sack to your bars with some webbing straps.
This is a tidier way of doing that and includes a pouch which is handy for storing all sorts of quick grabs; shades, sunscreen, snacks, etc...

Revelate has some options on their site too.

As for auxiliary packs. There are tonnes of options out there. Revelate would be your best bet for off the shelf though.

Osprey packs are the unofficial bike packers back pack so you're already part way there!

Once you're all kitted you can come up over the border and ride that trail he did in that video. It's about 5 hour drive from Vancouver... God's country up there my friend.

Oh man thanks for the suggestions! How much does that seat bag hold or better yet what do you put in to it? I'll measure my triangle and see what's up and I'll definitely utilize what space I have. Haha I'll get to work on getting a passport and getting some bear spray.

People generally either put sleep kit or clothing in seat bags and then the converse in their bar rolls. If I have time I'll take some pics tomorrow with the bag stuffed so you could roughly see the size. It's definitely smaller than some of the monster seat packs you've seen online, but in my opinion/experience huge seat packs generally aren't that great. They make the bike handle weird. Small is good behind the seat.

Thanks for the help! I'm going to go around to local bikeshops tomorrow and see if they have any frame bags I could look at.  I think my triangle fits the specs for revelate but i'd rather be sure before ordering anything. If anything it'll ensure I only pack the essentials haha.

So, I had to settle for a rack for now as the frame bags are too large and no one has anything in stock. I'm going to REI in the morning to see if I can find something to lash my tent to my bars with. I will definitely be getting gas cans for my top tube and a handle bar bag and I guess I'll just be on the lookout for oldish cheaper bikes that I can do something with in the future.
