I'm new to the southwest and have a question about traveling ultralight with tarps. How much are scorpions and snakes an issue when going tent-less? What can be done to minimize potential danger?

Check the area around before throwing the bag down.  If I'm feeling paranoid I'll get my shoes off the ground, too.

Hasn't been a problem for me in many nights of tent-less AZ camping. 

The only time I've seen scorpions in AZ is doing trail work (overturning rocks).

Never had a problem camping.  I did have to evict two scorpions from our house in Prescott over two years, one from my pillow right before I went to sleep.

Just shake your shoes out in the morning (and I turn mine upside down). Never been bothered by snakes, spiders or the like in my bivy.
