What type/brand/model knife do you carry?  Do you attach it to your pack or keep it in your pocket?  Anyone strap a fixed blade and sheath to their bike?  Maybe under the top tube? Would this be considered carrying a concealed weapon?

I usually carry a Swiss Army knife in the pack.  My favorite models are the basic ones with large and small knife blades, can and bottle openers, awl, and cork screw.  They aren't very good for protection but are great for opening wine and beer bottles, cutting pepperoni, spreading cheese, etc.  BFK's are just extra weight and not very useful.

I carry a Clauss pruning shear with the handle loops bobbed off.

Sharp as heck, sharp point for piercing, partial serrated edge, cuts pretty much anything you throw at it. Lightweight and super handy. I keep a little roll of duct tape around a piece of hydration hose for a sheath.

I used to have a machete that tucked into my sleeping gear, and I try to always have one 3-5" blade (fixed or folding) for cooking/camping use, which I generally keep on my person. The machete was frequently useful but never necessary. It's worth noting that I don't often camp at campgrounds.

Occasionally carry a Leatherman but ALWAYS have a Gerber folding, lockblade knife in my tool kit, not sure of the model but it has a titanium handle & is very light. I've never worried about a folding knife being a concealed weapon as I grew up carrying one to school daily & comparing my latest pocket knife with some of my teachers knives, I guess those days are long over though!

I always carry a folding knife with at least a 3" blade. As for carrying one attached to your bike and it being a concealed weapon: each State has different laws but if it is in plain view it is not concealed...As a cop for 28 years if you want to lock someone up you can always find a reason, but someone bikepacking with a knife just would  not meet the standard of Probable Cause....

Benchmade or nothing. They are sharp as hell and weigh very little.

Here's the one I got:

http://www.benchmade.com/products/530

Light (less than 2 oz)
Foldable (takes up little space)
Sharp sharp sharp (so sharp you can cut wood in a pinch)
Has a serrated edge (for emergency)

Depends on your priorities. For me the knife is my most important pieces of gear.

Yes expensive but one helluva knife

i carry a 3" gerber that locks;  it's pretty light and inexpensive.  i'd love a benchmade, but don't want to spend that much on something i don't use too often.  i keep mine in a front pocket on my handlebar bag.  i don't really know about a concealed weapon, but who would stop you as you are riding along?

Just a tiny SOG knife. I think it's the mini or micro, not sure. I sometimes carry a small Victorinox knife. The reality is, no one who has ever croaked in the woods as done so because their knife was sorta sharp and not really sharp.

As for using a knife for self defense - that's a tough one. My advice, get over those fears or stay home. Most of the people I run into are pretty nice. More deserving of a hand shake than a slit throat.
