Hi! I created an account just for this question. I missed a call from Kurt (username: krefs) today, and he left me an intriguing voice mail. As some of you may know, he's on Baffin Island right now, walking on some really old glaciers and having a grand old time. He found something unexpected today: a few bikes, circa 95 (ish), some ice axes, and other signs of an expedition from which the adventurers bailed.

Kurt wanted more information regarding this if any could be found. I'm not seeing anything that sounds right with some basic googling. I thought that if anyone would know, it would be the people on this site. Does anyone know anything about this? Was anyone here in that expedition? Inquiring minds want to know.

Funny to see this here... he called me today too, amazingly clear phone call. I'm going to do some research into it.

there was a planned expedition a while back that i read about. two guys were planning on riding surlies to both poles. it was called "polar roll", and after i got back from a year and half long trip, i tried looking it up and all info related to it had completely disappeared from the internet. they had a website, loads of sponsors, detailed itineraries. it was several years after 1995 that i initially read about it though.

I just returned from Baffin...while up there I got word on the the expedition that left behind the bikes we found at the margin of the Barnes Ice Cap and the tragic end of their journey.  It was led by Mike Moe, a very accomplished adventurer.  Their group of four successfully crossed central Baffin Island from Foxe Basin to the fiords on the east coast via bikes and skis, going over the Barnes en route.  They were met by an Inuit guide who was to take them by boat to Clyde River, the nearest village.  On the trip to Clyde, a Bowhead whale surfaced under the boat, flipping it, and only the guide survived.

Mark Jenkins wrote about it in his last piece for Outside Magazine:  http://outside.away.com/outside/destinations/200610/climbing-diamond-wyoming-1.html

That really wasn't the story I was hoping to hear about why those four bikes were neatly stashed in the absolute middle of nowhere.

I wonder if the families know the bikes and gear are there?

I've contacted Mike Moe's family through Mark Jenkins, the author of the Outside article.  I brought back the two ice axes to return to the family.

Looking at your blog those bikes seem like in good condition considering how long they've been out in the elements.

Wow....................

I had been invited by Dan Moe to join the expedition but I declined since I was in my early years of marriage and mortgage.  That was the Christmas before the trip.

In March my wife and I joined our friends from Laramie Wyoming for a hut to hut ski trip in Canada among the group was Sharon who had joined the Baffin expedition.  During our ski trip we talked about the Baffin trip - plans, provisions, logistics, riding into crevasses and away from polar bears.  Things seemed to be coming together.

Summer came and the expedition had been going well.  While visiting Laramie we were told by Sharon's boyfriend Dan that the group had reached the other side of Baffin and were waiting for their arranged boat ride.  That is where the trouble began.

The boat owner was a week late and they had run out of food.  When he showed up he had a much smaller boat since his larger boat (the boat they had originally hired) was not working.  The boat was overloaded with five people in it and its stability was very tender. The boat owner did not bring their dry suits as he was instructed to--though he did bring
a leaky survival suit for himself which saved his life but the leak caused him to lose both lower legs later due to frostbite/gangrene.

Mikes pack with his journal was found a year or more later.  He wrote that the group had serious doubts about getting into the boat but they had no food and were already starving.

The boat owner was weakest link in the expedition.  The lesson:--the core members may be super competent but they at times need to be able to trust that "supporting members" will be competent enough to do the right things as well.

Mike and Dan Moe were consummate adventurers.  As far as biking they rode Continental Divide in the early 80s(?) a year after they hiked the trail and saw then that they might be able to ride most of it.  Maps were studied, a route was created, sponsors gathered, and they got 'er done. Mike McCoy who wrote CYCLING THE GREAT DIVIDE called them the "trail blazers of the GDT".  There was also a trip to circumnavigate Australia.

Sharon was a sunny spirit with an underlying resolve to finish whatever she started.

I didn't know Brad but I bet he was a stellar individual judging by the company he kept thumbsup

I miss these guys.

Just got my mail, it included my copy of Michael McCoy’s “Cycling the Great Divide”.
Flipped it open to check for any revision dates and read at the top of the page

{This book is dedicated to the memory of Mike and Dan Moe of Laramie, Wyoming, who lived and died for adventure.  They were the true trailblazers of mountain biking the Continental Divide}

their story is still in my head….

Salute
