Hello, everyone. As a preface, I've been combing the forums looking for related topics but I feel I'm looking for help a little too specific. I live in Florida, and my best friend and I have been thinking about starting to bikepack in the several state parks in the area. I was wondering if you guys could help us get started on picking the correct bikes and gear we'd need to spend a night or two out in the Florida wilderness. We're trying to keep a budget of about 500-600 bucks for the bike. Now, as you may know, there is virtually zero elevation here in Florida, but I think eventually, if this hobby contains our interest, we might strike out in Georgia at a later date. I'd like a bike that could handle that, maybe with a few upgrades along the way. The ones I've been looking at so far are the TREK Marlin 5, TREK X-Caliber 6, and a 2014 TREK Wahoo Gary Fisher edition.  Also, if anyone had any recommendations on shelters that would be ideal in the Florida heat and humidity, I'd be much appreciative. Thank you in advance!

Well your bike budget is pretty low, so I would recommend buying used. I like 29ers especially for flatter terrain. They go farther faster.  A hardtail or rigid bike will suffice. A rack on the back is cheap and easy. You will be constantly revising and upgrading your gear so try to go cheap til you understand what works for you.
As far as a shelter goes, you might look into a tarp and a bug net. Again, cheap and functional. I spend way to much time and money on gear. Something better is always out there. Experience is your best guide. Start with what you have or can borrow or buy cheaply and work from there

I don't know about things in the US, I am Dutch, but I guess old fashionedsecond hand 26 inch steel full rigid mtb's are great value for money. They are indestructable. Buy a decent one will still leave you with enough money to upgrade (drivetrain and wheels for instance).

Thanks for the help, guys. What are your thoughts on a 2014 TREK Wahoo 29er with a 19" frame? I found one on Craigslist for 420, though I might be able to talk him down a bit more.
