Hi, I'd like to attach a bottle cage below the down tube, but my bike doesn't have braze-ons there. Suggestions for a clamp on system?
My down tube is wide and square.

Hose clamp at the bottom zip tie the top then use a Velcro strap to secure the bottle so the strap takes a lot of the weight as well. Used this system to fork mount bottles that were only used at top off points.

Add some inner tube rubber under those hose clamps and you should be good. Prevents paint scratching and slippage.

right just I just used some gorilla tape on the fork legs but you'll need something with some bite rather then straight up metal on metal.

Duct tape with some tube scraps has done wonders for me. Used for down tube mounted Salsa Anythining cage carrying Kleen Kanteen 64 oz full of water.
It's not the prettiest solution but neither are hose clamps.

I've used hoseclamps with inner tubes underneath for extra grip on non round tubes but found that after a few rough days out on the trail things started to shift a a bit. Elite do these little adjustable mounts http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-vip-bottle-cage-clamps/ but I'm not sure how much better they would be, especially on the rough stuff or on square tubes. |

TwoFish makes tons of stuff. Under the downtube is one of the few places where I would use it, since it has a tendency to swing around on fork legs, but the weight of the bottle keeps it pointing down on the downtube. I have one that fits a Nalgene bottle, and I know they make ones that fit the huge Hydroflask growlers. http://www.twofish.biz/bike.html |

I am running a carbon suspension fork, a full frame bag, a set of home made feedbags, and a viscacha seat bag. I would like an option to carry additional water.
I'm not clamping anything on the carbon fork. My seatbag and frame bag are full. My feedbags will carry two bottles and I can have a 2 liter bottle bag in the framebag.
Have a look at the photo I have attached. It would be pretty easy to fabricate a wider version of this that would be attached to the saddle rails and would not interfere with the seatbag. The bottles would face to the side instead of to the back on this version. These would be empty most of the time but would be an option when I needed extra water.
Any thoughts?

I have no braze-ons whatsoever down there...but thanks for sharing. It would be better to keep water lower and I am certain that I can come up with a way to create a mount point for a cage that will work. I appreciate the links and photos. Thanks!

Hobo, I've used something similar to the setup you're suggesting, and the only downside I've experienced is that the cages willl loosen and/or the bottles pop out and you don't know about it until you reach back there for a bottle.
Every year at Dirty Kanza you see bottle cages (with the bottle still in them) after those bottle mounts have rattled apart

They pop out of form cages to. Use a rubber o ring from the hardware store or an old toe strap. voille ski straps work well too.

Sorry, I can't hold out any longer. Stand by for shameless product promotion. The Honaker Hydro Pack holds a standard Nalgene bottle (1 liter), attaches with velcro and has Hypalon on the straps to keep it in place. Thoroughly tested and expedition proven. No aluminum to fatigue and break, no braze ons or riv-nuts to pull out.  |
