This segment is not allowed for mountainbikes because you will hit the Superstition Wilderness. I encourage you to respect the Wilderness closure for mountainbikes.

But if you like to do a lot of HAB and bushwhacking, you can try the Superstition Bypass over the Gunsight Gap section that Scott Morris proposed.

Good luck!  thumbsup

There's a fair bit of trail, that you can ride North of Picket Post. Just not all the way thru to the Lake. I've been out to Roger Trough http://www.aztrail.org/passages/pass_19.html and then ridden S towards Picket Post. That's the shuttle way when you camp with the wife, you could ride up the 2 wheel road or a 4 wheel road to make a loop.

That's http://www.aztrail.org/passages/pass_18.html it's not Wilderness so we're legal. The next two passages are Wilderness, pretty sure Scott and Lee are the only ones to do Gunsight Gap. After the 4 Peaks we had worked out a way to rejoin http://www.aztrail.org/passages/pass_21.html at FR 422, this worked a couple of times but fires have kept it off the table.

So far no one is complaining that the AZTR course is too easy, so I doubt we'll see either of these segments added to the race course anytime soon.

Kurt recently bikepacked the Gunsight Gap (Superstition Bypass) route pioneered by Lee and myself.  He didn't much like it, other than the geology and scenery.  Haunted Canyon is a beast, for sure.  It works, it goes through, but isn't really recommended.

This weekend is the AES "Picketpost Punisher" which is a free endurance event featuring 30, 50 and 80+ mile loops all including the Montana Mtn and Whitford Canyon section of the AZT.  The course do loops on both sides of Picketpost / US 60.  So those trails do get ridden....
