I am still looking to purchase a GPS for bikepacking. Would I be better off purchasing a Garmin Vista HCX or the newer eTex 20? I don't want to get one and wish I had the other. I would like to use the unit on multi-day bikepacking trips.

From what I know about the new eTrex line they could be worth the wait. Early Sept. is the current release date being advertised. Prices look good on the new ones. I haven't yet seen one in hand, so can't say for sure. I will post a review here on the site once I get one and get some time with it.

I saw the eTex 20 on sale for $180.00 on Amazon with a 2 week delivery. It was actually cheaper than the Vista...

I would consider it more of a major overall in terms of UI and software. The track splitting limitation is gone (though I'd still like the ability to use tracks longer than 10k, which is likely the limit, but you can have 200 of them).

Yep, 2 weeks sounds about right. Though they had a street date of Aug 15th back in July, so I wouldn't hold my breath. I definitely plan on getting one and putting it through the paces.

What does everybody do about GPS when NOT bikepacking? Use the same unit and constantly buy/toss or recharge batteries or do you have multiple units? I like my 305 because it holds a good charge especially with a larger battery (approaching 24hrs), but it's not good enough for multiday trips (for many reasons), whereas it seems the good multiday units don't make as much sense for daily use?

Also, does a rechargeable lithium exist?
