Okay, perhaps a silly question for the extremely hardcore racers (i.e., less than 3-4 hours of sleep at night), but what does everyone do with food at night during an event such as the CTR?  I've done lots of backpacking and it would be really odd for me to not hang all my food in a tree while sleeping... but something tells me most bikepackers probably don't do this whilst racing.  Comments?

In Colorado, I'm not as concerned about bears as I am in places like Alberta. So, on the CTR, I just kept all my food with my bike, and parked the bike 30 or so away from my bivy. No food at all near the bivy. I figure that a bear will prefer my bike to me, and that I will probably be able to scare a bear away if I hear it (black bears are generally scared of people in Colorado). Worst case, the bear takes the food, and I have to ride for a day or two on empty...

In 2009, I was good about hanging food for the first 2 nights. After that I used my backpack with a lot of food in it as a pillow. I do try to be smart when in bear country but I get sloppy at times. I know for sure I won't be hanging food at all this year.

You could stay within range of Toby and quietly place your food near his bed after he's all tucked in.

Just kidding Toby.  icon_biggrin
