I need some help with my Garmin etrex 20. Recently upgraded from Etrex Vista, so I'm familiar with the GPS, just not the new model.
Problem - I have a thumb tack symbol on my map page (waypoint? thumb tack? - it's blue). It shows a fat purple line from the thumb tack to my current location. It's bugging me, and I want it gone.
Deleted all way points. Deleted all routes. Deleted all tracks Took out the SD card Did a factory reset.
Thumb Nail is still on my map with a purple line to my current location. help?

Does the Etrex 20 have a custom display screen during startup?
On the Etrex Vista I used to have it display my name and phone number so if I lost it on the trail someone might be kind enough to call me. I've never lost one though. I added a camera strap leash to the new Etrex 20 and loop it through the bar bag straps.

You can edit the file 'startup.txt' which I'm pretty sure (don't have unit on me) is found in the root directory on the unit. I've changed mine to include a phone number...and have contemplated a little message along the lines of...'if you bought this off someone other than <insert name> then it's probably lost/stolen or strayed'

thanks man! That worked perfectly. I added the text to the GPS screen and also included my information in the Startup.txt file inside the <! prompts !> that has all my contact info in case the GPS is lost or stolen.

I picked up an etrex 20. Never used a GPS unit before. Very beginner question: how do you start/stop tracking? On my iPhone, it's a simple "start/stop" button. On the etrex, it seems it automatically starts right when you turn it on. Went under "tracking" and it has an option for "auto", but only other options are "distance" and "time." For the life of me, can't figure this out.
Any input appreciated. Thanks.

The GPS tracks as soon as it is turned on. Don't think of it as a cycling training tool, there are better options if that is what you need. I think there is a way to set the GPS to not record a track, but it typically records when you turn it on. I turn mine on ahead of time, and when I am ready to ride I just reset the data and clear the track.

Thanks for the clarification, rhino. Kind of a bummer. If one were doing multiple day rides with no computer access to download, is there a way to save each track? Is that what the "archive" file is for?

Archive function is new to me, I haven't used it yet. You can save a track anytime you want by going to the Track Manager on your home screen. You can save a track 10 times a day, and many many times over the weekend. You just have to clear your current track after you save and clear the odometer stuff.

I turn tracking on only when I want to record. Setup>Tracks>Track Log. Then choose "do not record", "record, show on map" or "record don't show on map". This is just a fancy way of saying on or off. That way for instance my gps can be on when I'm riding to the start of a ride, but not recording the track till I want it to.

yes, you can save tracks at any time, and archive them as well. you can also set it to auto archive at specific intervals...
