I'm new to bikepacking as well but not new to bikes or the Internet. Your question is getting lots of views but no responses because it is not capable of an answer. Bike fit is individualized based on your body and riding style. Do you like to be upright or in a race position, etc? Only you know that stuff; no one here can answer without knowing more.
In my experience road bikes and mountain bikes size differently because the task they do is different and, beyond that, there's geometry to take into consideration. I have three bikes that fit perfectly and none are the same size frame. The best way to know is to go and get measured and fitted based on your body and the bike's geo. If you have to buy exclusively online, I'd go to a shop and try on bikes with similar geometry to get a feel for it and then figure out a way to "thank" the shop for their help sans purchase.
