There seem to be a lot of books about touring the roads, not much on the dirt experience.  So this thread is awesome.  I can't wait to follow up on some of the posts.  Thanks to the OP.

Most of the books I have read don't talk much about gear either, but I suspect that everyone has their own level of comfort.  So what you deem essential and worth the weight, others may find frivolous.  Besides, once your gear is dialed in, the real adventures begin.

I would also recommend the Metal Cowboy for it's story telling, and 'Miles from Nowhere' by Barbara Savage - written in the late 70's about a tour around India and the Middle East with a twist ending, and, um, hmm, a few more that escape the brain right now.

I read "Miles from Nowhere" and thought it was pretty cool. Barbara and her husband start off biking across the US and just keep going and end up around the world. I like how in the beginning they fueled on jelly donuts and soda, and by a few months in they were hitting local farmer's markets and cooking with nuts & berries.

Might find some interesting journals here, although most are on dirt roads.

Just finished the second book by mr. Kuryaski (sp?) the author of the metal cowboy. Nothing about bikepacking, but good reading and talking about riding roads.

Here's an interesting one I hadn't heard of before. I had heard of Humphreys and Lilwall riding the Kolyma/Road of Bones, but didn't know there was a book, let alone a DVD available.

Any reviews from our British and/or Aussie members? Apparently the dvd was aired on Aussie Nat'l Geographic channel.

Not a book but Singletrack magazine ...

Over a decade ago, before I spent many of the intervening years off the rails, I was responsible for creating the website which morphed into Singletrack magazine.

I've been reading "Two Wheels On My Wagon" by Paul Howard.  Basically about the author, who's British, doing the Tour Divide, from never even riding a mountain bike to finishing it.  I'm only part of the way through, but it's interesting so far.  Worth checking out.

Kinda on the level with carrying a good deal of weight, but still a favourite read of mine, Odysseus's Last Stand, By Dave Stamboulis. Not tons of focus on the gear, but lots of interesting stories and people from all around the world.

I'll have to check that one out, my wife and I are big Rush fans. She has read http://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Rider-Travels-Healing-Road/dp/1550225480/ref=pd_sim_b_3 but that one is a motor bike tour.

Nice! The "Around Africa" video reminds me of Brian Vernor's (Which many of you are hopefully familiar with) film about racing Africa:
