I'm trying to decide between a sweet roll and a harness for my handlebar system. I generally lean towards a harness because it seems to me that it'd be more convenient for packing/unpacking. I imagine I'd have a drybag/waterproof stuff sack that fits what I want, strap it in on the harness and away I go, get to camp site, unstrap bag and It's easy to access. Whereas if I went with a sweet roll, it seems like I'd either have to take the bag off and put it back on every day, or try and stuff it full while on the bike. The sweet roll seems rather inconvenient but everything I've read has people saying that it's very convenient, I just can't figure out how.
Is this accurate? or is there something I'm missing? I've only used a drybag strapped to the bars and it was generally a pain to put on and take off every day.
I also like the flexibility of harness, that I could use it with drop bars and a short bag if I wanted to.
Any thoughts, experience, or baseless conjecture?

yeah, I read that, but it didn't really answer my questions. I'm mostly wondering if people remove the sweetroll, or just load/unload it on the bike, and if people with the harness can leave it on. Is the sweet roll really convenient? or is it just lighter than the harness?

I have no experience with the sweet roll but I like the harness. I used a drybag with the harness and if you completely empty it out, it is just easier to take it off and load than to keep it on the bike. I pack my drybag pretty full so it is easier to have the bag in my hands to stuff it. I usually hold it vertical to stuff it, which is not possible if it is still on the bike (which is a difference with the sweet roll).
I also like the versatility of the harness that you can pick different sizes of dry bags, depending on your particular need for a particular trip.

thanks for the help, I went with the harness, I like to do some racing, but I think I will enjoy the versatility of the harness more for touring.

I too also have no experience with the Sweet Roll but I do with the Harness. I would go with the versatility of the Harness as you have more options to add to the load if needed (up to a point of course).

Sweet Roll is meant to stay on the bike, unless you really like to fiddle with straps. You can load/unload the bag from either side. The drybag type closure, fabric rolling then a plastic buckle, allows the size [bag width in this case] to expand/contract with the load. I use a small [~4L] and lightweight Sea to Summit drybag inside the Sweet Roll for items that need to stay dry and other items just go in loose.

I had a harness and thought it was a PITA to use. We bought a sweet roll and it is much superior in my opinion. You can unhook it pretty easily from the bike but I see no need to. With openings on both sides it is easy to get to your stuff and it fold up and clips easily. You can also buy an optional front pouch that will fit on the front of the sweet roll.

Different tools for different jobs IMO. Sweetroll is a convenient, attached drybag, dual ended access and the pocket remains attached, but cannot deal with large and bulky items (think 40 below bag and a z-lite, or packraft and paddle) so ideal for a bag and a pad, some clothes etc. Harness excels with larger loads. I use sweetroll on the fargo (woodchippers), 29er and fatbike for summer trips, the harness for winter fatbike, with a large drybag, so I can detach the drybag and unpack/pack easier - especially with a large winter bag and layers. Get both  |
