Newbie questions here.

I have an Old Man Mountain rear rack for my full-suspension mountain bike and I plan to carry some of my gear in a waterproof compression bag attached to it.  Many of the trails I ride are both steep and rough so I am wondering what is best to use for securing a bag to the rack, something that I won't have to stop and tighten up or adjust every few miles.

I will be carrying another waterproof bag measuring 6 inches in diameter and 16 inches long at the front of the handlebar.  What would be best for securing that bag in place and how do I tie it to the handlebar to prevent the bag from bouncing around?   icon_scratch

Bungee cords or straps seem to be the logical answer but I'm thinking something better may be available.  If not, then a few tips on securing everything in place would be most welcome and appreciated.

Many thanks and happy trails.   Wink

Lots of options, best to do some testing on a bumpy trail imo

You might start here:
REI's rip-and-stick straps with D-ring

http://www.rei.com/product/794899

come in 3 lengths-- 12 18 and 24  inches

I use them all the time for strapping stuff to my bike but also include couple of the 12 inch ones in my 1st aid kit for quick securing of an emergency wrapping on a arm or leg

oh ya--I like the way they roll up and tuck away in a nook --very compact storage!!!

Not bungee cords. They are often not very secure and always very heavy. The velcro straps mentioned before or small cam buckle straps are lighter and more secure.

The bag you plan to strap to your handlebars would be perfectly suited to a Revelate Designs sling or harness, https://www.revelatedesigns.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=store.catalog&CategoryID=3.

If you go with straps and buckles, AVOID these:

The webbing is so thick and rough that it barely slides through the buckles, especially when swollen with water.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.  Looks like a good rig and I will definitely consider it.   thumbsup

You just saved me some money as I was on the verge of ordering several of the "Pattern Strap With Buckle".  How about this one, have you tried it?  http://www.rei.com/product/380014

I'm thinking the Rip-And-Stick Strap recommended by Trail717 is gonna be tough to beat.  It appears to be Velcro--no problems with that during rainy or cold weather I assume.

I want to thank everyone for taking the time to offer advice.  After I get everything all sorted out and a few bikepacking trips under my belt I'll post a few comments on my experiences.

If By cold you are talking wet cold, Velcro is Probably not the best choice, I have had velcro freeze on me in the winter. And sure, Buckles can freeze too, but it is a lot easier to thaw out a buckle than a whole strip of velcro.

The plastic buckles are a bit fragile especially in extremely cold temperatures, I have broken a fair number on backpacks etc. Mostly due to user crushing, but still. I also worry about the possibility of them coming completely open all of a sudden.  My vote goes strongly to the old fashioned spring loaded buckle, even if they fail in icy or muddy conditions you can still tie off the webbing behind them. I think the 'climbing belt' style seemed nice too bad about the webbing swelling up too much. Need to find something with some polyester webbing maybe.

The Surly straps look pretty good.

As far as bungee's go how many broken ones have you seen along the highway.

I have used toe straps for several things where they were long enough to work so the idea of a longer one makes good sense.
