Hi all, can you give me some feedback on shoes for Self Supported type races?
I toured the GDMBR in Lake MX165's, awesome shoes, great fit, great soles, but WAY heavy. I feel like I can feel them as I peddle!!
What do you guys race in?
I would love some Sidi Dominators, but do have concerns about the rachet clasps.
Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers, Scott

Northwave is a team shoe sponsor for Topeak-Ergon, so I had to choose what was available to me (the +/- of sponsorships).  I was on LAKE a few years back....and liked their product...but as you said, heavy.

The last 2 years we have been on Northwave, and they actually have a pretty slick little shoe for the bikepacking:  Northwave Touring (http://www.northwave.com/usa/shoes_det.php?itemid=629&catid=4&area=4)

- It's lightweight
- No mechanical buckles or straps (this is something I was wanting for CTR)
- Great for hiking/walking
- Sole is stiff...but also flexable
- Durability looks good so far with all my CTR specific training
- $$$ is inexpensive (just under $100)
- Rubber sole has good grip...but not super aggressive like 'most' mtb shoes.  I have been on mud, rocks, wet rocks, roots, etc.....with no issues.

wow that looks solid !  seems most of the shoes that have a good stiff carbon sole don't work well when yah gotta hike...  only a bit you can't pedal on the divide unless SS'ing it...

when i was clipping in a was a fan of the cheap lace up lakes and played around with a aluminium insert  where the cleat bolted into and it was about 3 times the size of the typical steel spd steel plate... did alot to stiffen things up but tended to such the heat out of my feet =)
