I agree with Mike. Used to just shove clothes in a stuff sack. Bought the pillow recommended above and really like it. Fill it how you like it. Packs small and is light

As much as I want to save weight, I will probably invest in a pillow like that linked to above. I've tried the stuff sack method and just couldn't get comfortable with lumps or the smell of the stuff sack. Last weekend, I thought I was clever using my puffy jacket stuffed into its own pocket. The cushioning was alright but the inside of the pocket was slippery fabric against the slippery surface of the thermarest. Every time I moved my head, the pillow slid off the mattress!

Another vote for the STS pillow! I used to think such things were silly and made do with a rolled up jacket. But that pillow packs so small and is so lightweight that it made me a convert. Really nice if you use a hammock, too.

I picked up some thing with chunks of memory foam in it that you roll into a small cylinder when you pack it; it's comfy and light (although not as small as that little thing when it's rolled up).

For bikepacking...
I put my shoes under my bivy where my head is to give some height. Inside the bivy a stuff sack with anything soft, usually other stuff sacks as I'm almost always wearing everything I brought to sleep in.
For touring...
I used to bring a discarded water wing that split at the seam. Perfect inflatable pillow. I've tried to get rid of all single use items so the water wing doesn't make it out as often as it used to. When touring though I usually have a change of clothes so clothing in a stuff sack works great combined with bike shoes under the bivy.

When backpacking I'd create a little nest for my head with my shoes, pointing the toes together and setting my head in the middle. Now I have a Nemo pad with a little pillow built in. It isn't much, but so far I've been way too freaking tired after peddling all day to notice.

I have a ~10 liter stuff sack that is lined with fleece. Works great for me, especially with a puffy jacket inside.

I normally roll pretty lightweight, but a pillow is a luxury I don't go without. IMHO, those inflatable pillows suck, and so do stuff sacks of clothes and the like. I went to a craft store and bought a small square pillow for $7 or so. I pulled out some of the synthetic stuffing (it has a tiny zipper on the case). It's still big enough to work but packs down small and weighs next to nothing.
