Ok, doing some research in anticipation of my REI dividend.  I can read online the difference but I'm a total newb at these things.  My 2 biggest uses for them will be for
1.  following a route on a bikepacking trip
2.  Geocaching with the kiddo/wife

It would be nice to know what elevation I am at while riding/hiking.

What are ya'lls thoughts?

The 30 has barometric altimeter and compass that's accurate when not moving. The 20 doesn't have these features.

The 20 does allow you to see your approximate elevation (based on your location and map set data if i'm not mistaken) and the compass is only accurate while you are moving (when standing still it can point in an arbitrary direction, but will correct as soon as you start walking/riding).

Is that something that is worth the extra $100+ dollars?

The 30 will also integrate with Garmin ANT sensors. These include a speed/cadence sensor, which enables the unit to function as a regular cycling computer, a heart rate sensor, and a temperature (Tempe) sensor.

I picked the 30 for the heart rate ANT. Valuable to me. Aside; I upgraded to the eTrex 30 from the Edge 305 for following tracks on a larger screen. I made an assumption the 30 would do heart rate zones. It doesn't, it only reads heart beats per minute. Odd the edge 305 is programmable to heart rate zones and the much more detailed eTrex 30 isn't.

I just picked up the Etrex 20 at Cabela's the other day because it was on sale for $170 & my son has that model & he can teach me how to use it, sorry I know nothing more about it yet, I'm old school & very stubborn when it comes to learning high tech, my old flip phone is still serving me quite well! LOL!

While I wish I could say I'm old school, I'm only 34 so I think I'm a bit young to say that.  That being said, new tech is new tech.  I don't care about heart rate, and I don't think I'll be doing any navigation by GPS compass.  I would like to know my current elevation, but if the 20 can't show that while riding it's not a deal breaker.  I can always find that out after downloading the file.

I guess for the price I'll probably just get the 20.  With my dividend (when is that dang thing coming out?  Gotta be soon) and 20% off coupon, I'll be paying peanuts for it.

It, the 20, will show your elevation. It just uses the satellite and the map-set to tell you an approximate number. I've been standing next to another person with a Garmin and have seen differences displayed between the units of several hundred feet.

I use the 20 and have never wanted any more features. It works well.

I used the Dividend and voila I am now working on the rest of the process and trying to figure it out. Went for the E-Trex 20 and figure that should do the job to get from here to there and back again.

will add more when I go for a Ride.

no bike mount at the store.

Did you use the 20 percent off coupon with it?  I was under the assumption it was available to us until next week. I've got quite a bit in dividend money coming to me since I use the rei credit card.   I love free money (yes I understand interest, but when the card is paid in full every month it's all good!)
