I'll be making a gas tank at some point.  How do they work by the seatpost?  It seems like that would be more secure and out of the way, but harder to access while riding.
Do they use stiffener on the sides?

Mine works well on both the seatpost and the headtube.

I would definitely add stiffener to the sides.  Working the zip one-handed wouldn't work well otherwise.

If I was making one, I'd go for a full length seat-tube to head-tube design.

In my experience with a pretty roomy front gas tank, it's actually the opposite. The gas tank functions as some rather welcome padding for my top tube, and it's usually filled with soft stuff like jacket, museli bars etc...

There are pics of full length gas tank on eric's site, and probably Jeff's too.

Standover doesn't mean a lot to me but I hate hitting my knee on the stem. That hurts.
