Hi all. New to this forum. Thinking of getting a new bike that I can ride all year for commuting 25km both ways, and tour/bikepack on for weekend and longer rides. Currently Im looking at the genesis Longitude 29'er and the genesis Caribou fatbike. I know the caribou would need mayby a 22/36 chainset instead of the 30t only it has on standard especially for commuting.

My question is, is it in anyway possible (without the cost of a second bike) to buy an extra 29'er wheelset and swap with the fat tires on the fatbike so that I can have both a 29'er and a fatbike in one?

Yes, kinda.

Your second set, 29er wheels, will have to be built on fatbike hubs (wider) that fit your fatbike frame.

I would try to use matching hubs if you can. Even then you may find that you need to make minor adjustments to the brake caliper. For myself I have two old 26er bikes one rigid one FS they both have been 69er's and have clearance for a new set of 27.5 wheels I have. I can also run a set of old 29/700 rims that I have set up with 40c tires as a pavement bike. I have to readjust the calipers every time as each wheel is on a different hub set but other then that I have 3 bikes in 2. Currently I have both set for the newer 27.5 wheels and I am moving the chain to keep wear on my cassette even.

If your only talking about moving things over twice a year seasonally it should be pretty simple. Not sure if there are any downsides to the wider BB required by the fat bike.

Yes given how expensive that can be especially for wide fatbike hubs it may be worth looking at a low cost 29er as a second bike.

What about going to a 29"+ frame instead a 29'er or fat bike. Kinda a middle ground, build your wheel around a rim that will take a smaller tire (2.25)  and still take a 3.0 tire as well.

As much as fat bikes are amazing, I would pick the 29'er over the fat bike if you are commuting. Way better options for 700c tires if your riding 25 km + per day to work... Fat bike would be painfully slow in comparison Sad
