I am beginning to sort out frame bags for bike packing and have the option of gearing up carbon or steel bikes.  I would prefer using my carbon On-One 29er.  It is stout and light with a good carbon fork.  But are there issues with using bags on a carbon frame?  I am not too worried about cosmetic issues (bikes are to be used), but wonder about other wear and tear issues on a carbon frame.

Any advice?  Thanks.

You can always get some helicopter tape and cover the areas that will get wear....

I rode the Tour Divide this summer with a Niner Air Nine Carbon and a Carousel Designs frame bag. Before I used the frame bag I wrapped Bike saver tape  http://www.coloradocyclist.com/search/results/RnJhbWUgdGFwZQ==
wherever the straps wrapped around the frame. After the race I lost some clear coat when I pulled the tape.  In hindsight I would use a tape with less adhesion. The Air Nine Carbon continues to be a great bike even with a little less clear coat.

My suggestion: Electrical [vinyl] tape offers decent protection and is easy to remove when the bags come off. You can probably find a color to match your frame. I run clear urethane tape for high wear areas, like where cables rub, but electrical tape where bags rub, since the bags aren't always on the bike. Best to apply some tape and then check for areas you missed after you ride a bit. Also, all the Velcro straps will stretch a bit after use, so re-tighten. Loose straps allow more bag movement and debris to get trapped and grind against your frame. On my Ibis Mojo [carbon frame], I have Relevate Gas Tank and Gerrycan bags and a Porcelain Rocket custom bag below the shock. Bits of electrical tape kept the bags from wearing the frame.
BTW, for CTR attempt, I changed out my carbon seatpost for an aluminum one, because I was worried about the Relevate seat bag wearing/rubbing the seatpost, which did indeed happen. There's a nice shiny area on the seatpost where the bag and wraparound strap wore against the post. However, very little wear of my [untaped] carbon bars from the Relevate Sweet Roll because there was very little dust/mud thrown up onto the bars.
