Hi,

Can anyone recommend a frame backpack that can be used when cycling? I need to carry as much heavy stuff as possible in the pack but I don't think a regular camping backpack would work. My bike is designed for the rider to sit upright and I have a rear basket that is about level with the bike seat. I'd like to get a frame pack because the frame transfers weight more efficiently to the belt and takes the strain off the shoulders. I came home yesterday with strained muscles in my neck from too much weight in my current knapsack.

Thanks

Knowing more about your bike and usage would help. The generally accepted best practice is to keep all of the heavy stuff off of your back and hang it off the bike frame somewhere, preferably low enough to not cause the bike to be top heavy, but not so low that it interferes with maneuverability.

That said, if you can find a used Ergon BC3, it has a fairly high capacity and is based around a frame that transfers the weight to your hips rather than your shoulders.

+1 on the ergon packs.  I use one for long day rides on technical terrain where I wouldn't use bags.  the only thing I don't like is if you load them to capacity they tend to shift; I think because they sit away off  your back.

+1 on the keep the weight on the bike.

I used an osprey talon for commuting last year and it worked well, but I was only carrying 12-15 pounds.

I know it's a lot of money, but the burley travoy looks like a possibility for moving a lot weight around on your bike for a daily commute http://www.burley.com/home/bur/page_416/travoy.html,

Even a good internal frame backpack will suck when riding a bike. The weight is up to high, your center of gravity is horrible, balance is out the window.
Due to the leaning posture on a bike the pack pushes on your back.

I have ridden many times with my backpacking backpack on my bike to the trainstation and can not recomend it for anything more than that.
