Hi,

I've just bought an etrex. I'm wondering what mount most people are using?

Regards,

GM

I bought the Garmin mount for my etrex 30x. The problem is that it likes to slip around when jarring the bike through rough terrain. I positioned it where I wanted it and used some adhesive to mount the rubber pad that comes with it to the bar on my bike. it is rock solid now.
But still a crappy design overall.

I rather like that mount. The hard part is getting the zip ties tight enough. On your stem it is no problem, and it won't slip at all, but on the handlebars they need to be tight. I use a zip tie gun to get it super secure.

I should note, I think there is something wrong with the back of my garmin because i had to file away at it for a while to get it to fit into the mount properly and actually release.

using the garmin mount. i added a bit of rubber that is thicker than the stock piece to the underside. when i use the zip tie gun to snug it down it stays put stem or bars... but i prefer stem.

add a leash to your unit though... just in case.

+1 on the leash.  I also prefer the stem for mounting, but my stem is too short.  I bought one of these:

Works great, and puts the GPS a little closer to me.  It's held up wonderfully on the last 3 tours.

I have one of those. I just zip tie it around the bar / stem joint. Works just fine.

I use the Garmin mount. Usually have bar tape wrapped around my bars for bikepacking to protect my carbon bars which also gives the mount something to sink into. Cinch the zip ties down tight, never had any issues. Also absolutely use a lanyard on the GPS tied to the bars. My has popped off a couple times and I've been glad to find it dangling from my bars and not in a ditch 10 miles back.

When you mention you use the garmin mount, is this the mount to which you are referring?

Yes, the one at the Garmin link.  Mine has survived 3 TD's.  A lanyard is essential, although I've never had mine pop off except once when I hadn't 'clicked' the GPS back in all the way.  My lanyard is basically small nylon cord.

Hello!

I prefer to use the Garmin Tether instead Garmin's bike holder.. It is secure and very fast to put or remove.. Plus it makes NO scratches to the handlebar. There's not necessary to put any tie-wraps or something similar to secure..
