Hi all,
I am looking for a product like the Fred bar where I can mount an aero bar on my bike but in a higher position. I have tried to run down a Fred Bar but it appears they are no longer produced. My limited internet kung fu has left me sad and broken as my search was fruitless. Can one of you all point this sorry soul to the correct path to find such a product. I will one day pass the good Karma on... and thank you greatly.

I tried to find one over here in the UK - no luck at all. So, I made one that takes the place of the handlebar clamp, rose up exactly the right height for my size, and held the GPS too. A bit of ali, some welding and heypresto, a tribar mount.

Hi,
I'm in the same boat so to speak.
Something similar to a Fred bar would make me a happy man. Unfortunately I have zero welding skills, so making my own isn't an option.
Can somebody help me out here?

An idea that I recently used successfully... http://zipp.com/accessories/detail.php?ID=16711They're designed for Zipp aerobars but with a little filing and some bigger/longer bolts they worked fantastically with my Profile t1+ aerobars. I used the 50mm risers on a set of Salsa Bend 2 bars on a month long bike tour in Chile this past November and December. I rode about 1750km of mixed roads from perfect asphalt to gravel roads to really shit construction site roads. They pass my testing for my use. I'd use them again without hesitation and they're way lighter than the double stem set up I was using previous to this. I checked them over the ride and had no issues with loosening. Don't blame me though if you end up on your face as they're not designed to run together. I'm 150lbs if people are curious or if that matters. Pic posted... Adam. |

Hi Adam,
For me the problem is not only wanting the aerobars somewhat higher, but also a fair bit closer than the steer.
I'm using Syntace C2s so there's no option for fore/aft correction. Hence a set of risers wouldn't help me out.
You wrote that you used to work with a double stem setup. Was this on the same bike as in the picture? It's hard to see in the picture, but it seems like there is not much room left for a second stem?
On my bike, there is 68mm of steerer tube sticking out. The headset is already quite low, so not much to gain there. So unless someone can point me towards some ultra-low stack (<35mm) stems, a double stem setup seems not possible for me.

Apologies for the blurry photo but it was the only one I could find that was close up.
I used a cheap, short 35 degree stem stacked on top of my main stem. I cut a section of a 31.6 seatpost to use as the auxiliary bar to mount the aerobars to. I had no issues with slipping or anything and covered a lot of km's with this set up on two different bikes.
You may run into issues though as the only caveat with this setup is you need a bunch of steer tube for both stems. So for some that may mean a new fork or heavy steer tube extender. Another thing is that if your aerobars don't have a forward back adjustment the shortest high rise stem may not get your aerobars back far enough.
One nice benefit with this set up is that it's really quick and easy to go from no aerobars to aerobars on your bike.

Need the info as well..... Thought I could manage without aerobars but my wrists are saying otherwise. Info for Ruth or info on size of the Fred bars or something? Not really sure how it works?! Thanks.
