I am looking to go backpacking on the Cross-Washington Route, in Washington State, USA. I would be taking a Motobecane Fantom Cross AL, with disc brakes, a 3-gear front cassette and an 8-gear rear cassette, 700c wheels, and an absorbent carbon fork.

The route itself is roughly 10% singletrack, to cope with this I was thinking about getting 40mm tubeless tires to cope with the terrain, and maybe a suspension seat post.

I would be taking the CX bike for faster speeds on doubletrack and gravel, which is the majority of the trail.

Is this a logical decision? Are there any other modifications that could be made? I am new to bike-packing...

I have read that there are a few sections with very large gravel/ballast, I would try to inquire of the state park and check out ride reports. I believe that there is a closed section east of the columbia as well.

Sorry for the late response,  but I've ridden parts of the eastern section on a cx  bike with 40mm tires. (Also a motobecane fantom!) It sort of worked, but a hardtail would have been much better.
