Hello,

I am new to the site and totally new to bikepacking.  I am converting a Ti hardtail 29 for the purpose.  I will need advice on best triple ring set up and cassette.  I have standard 9 speed triples (44/32/22), 10 speed triples (42/32/24), and also some custom chainrings for 9 speed--40/30/20 which I have not tried yet.  Cassettes on hand are 11/32, 11/34, and 12/34.  I am an experienced mountain biker but never rode a fully loaded 29er so trying to make decisions here and hope to not have to make changes later. I am also not averse to mixing 10 speed rings with 9 speed drivetrain as I think it will still work fine.  I might want to slap on some narrow smooth tires and do some dirt road/gravel riding as well. So some top end speed with no load might be desirable.  Any comments, advice or opinions are greatly appreciated.

I would start with the 9 spd triple. 44-32-22 and a 11-34 cassette. You aren't saying where you are going, so I recommend the lowest and tallest you have. No one ever complained about having too low a gear. Until you try, you can't know what is right. And I don't know how old / fit you are. I personally run a 44-32-24 triple and a 12-36 cassette. I tour in the Rockies mostly.
