Hello there. My name is Matthew and for the last several months have become quite interested in learning to build my bicycles to suit my needs. I have a bunch of equipment at my disposable due to a fortunate exchange, but there are some things I'm lacking.
I'm here to learn, in short. I've had some ideas for gearing and other mod's and I thought it was something original. UNTIL I ran across this board. Now I realize people are doing it and doing it well. The education is all I'm needing to do it myself.
Thanks.

Maybe I jumped on the wagon too quickly? Is this site mostly about gear and not necessarily bike builds?

I don't think you'll find to much information on here about bike builds. Maybe MTBR.com would be better for those types of questions. There are a lot of excellent DIY'ers on here though so if you have a specific question feel free to post up.
Welcome!

i think the original post brings up something of interest to me. the winter bikepacking section has a lot of great advice about winter specific products. i'd be really interested in bikepacking product reviews. which products are most durable and require the least amount of maintenance during Ultra racing. also associated with the category could be tips on how to fix mechanicals while on the trail. tips and tricks to say, fix a loose free hub body, and light weight tools to bring along to fix any sticky situation you might find yourself in. just a thought. or it would be great if someone could recommend a site that addresses these issues specifically in grand touring/ultra racing. thanks.
edit: sorry, new to the site, just saw the gear review section. never mind about that, but i still think an on the trail fix it yourself section might be cool.

DIY stuff is pretty cool and there are some enterprising folks on here. One in particular is out racing the AZTR right now. Mark Caminiti in having all kinds of mechanical problems out there one biggie is the loss of brake pads his fix glue a piece of plastic (from a patch kit) on to the old backing plate.
Welcome to the world of bikepacking it is starting to gain momentum with great new innovative products to help lighten the load.
As for bike builds there are a few threads out there on this subject though most do try to keep things bikepacking oriented. I would suggest trying MTBR but feel free to post up here as well.

Gear is interesting aspect. I am a big DIY'r, so I'd be interested homemade gear, racks, etc. But, I need to learn how people are making their own quad cranks, chainrings, and cogs, too. My interest in biking will be focused on touring and backwoods travel. So, I guess I'll poke around until I hit paydirt.........here as well as MTBR.
Thanks for the welcomes. I'll be around.

So, you want me to delete it? Or you wondering whether or not you should?
I know I haven't posted or even logged in in a long while. Sorry. If you need to delete it, go ahead I suppose. I'm glad I got a notice of reply, though. I would like to keep the account, if that'd be alright?

thook,
I don't think that anyone is asking to delete your account or posts. Rather, I think that a member who used to go by the name "wormholespazm" changed his account name to "delete this account" in hopes that a bikepacking.net administrator would delete HIS account.
Cheers, Toby
