I am looking at getting the Garmin Edge 510 for bikepacking.

My questions are.
Will it work for offroad?
Can I download GPX files and run them?

Is there a better gps I should look at.

It will work anywhere you take it.
Yes you can download and run pgx as well as many others.

Do a search for GPS and you'll see a cpl threads that go into details.  Others seem to like the eTrex line also.
