I'm training and planning my first bike packing race/event. I ride a 2013 Niner Jet9 RDO which I plan on using for these events. My concern is, I don't see too many people riding full suspension bikes and I'm wondering why. Also, I would like a rear shock that has a better lockout than the Fox that's on it now, any suggestions? I've always been a hard tail rider until I hurt my back last year.

I think there are a couple reasons. Perhaps most importantly, they limit frame bag capacity, which translates to more weight on the handlebars and your back, neither which are great. Second is that they have more moving pieces, and (sometimes perceived) reliability is important when you are alone 50 miles from the nearest bail out point.

A well maintained full suspension bike is fine, for the AZTR it has been suggested as the best option. If your looking for a new shock I have a DT Swiss that will lock out even if you loose all of the air. Not sure if they still make that model but it's worth looking for.
