Just wondering if strapping a small duffel bag to a rack would work (stay on) for singletrack.  I'd use an OMM rack.

I need more capacity than a big seat bag, but less than panniers.  I don't want to spring for frame pack etc.

While I haven't I have ridden with someone who has and it worked quite well for him.  He had it strapped down really well.  An Old Man Mountain rack is pretty tough.  As long as the weight is fine then I don't see it being an issue.

Depends on the weight and the quality of the rack.

With just a sleeping bag, bivvy, and sleeping pad- no problem.   I don't use a compression stuff sack, so the bungie cords I use have something to compress and hold in place.

I've had problems with denser loads shifting around while riding and loading up the rack with too much weight. (OK, next time just a regular sixer instead of a sixer of tall boys. icon_biggrin)

I have done the whole rack with a duffel thing, and it works well so long as you strap it down good and tight!
